Blaze of (comic) glory: Mel Brooks Back!

July 10th, 2009 - 6:11 pm ICT by GD Tell a Friend -

blazing saddlesTinsel-town’s legendary funnyman, Mel Brooks is back with a bang! Having elevated razor-sharp sarcasm and dry but sparklingly clever wit to altogether unparalleled heights of comic perfection, the unrivaled king of ‘Spoof-dom’ has reinvented himself all over again. And this time he’s gone the animated way, quite literally!

Creator of the naughtily irreverent but irresistibly funny 1974 classic wild-Western spoof “Blazing Saddles”, Brooks now returns with the similarly titled animated version of the comic masterpiece which is popularly believed to be the sequel to the former. His band of stereotypical but outrageously hilarious stock characters, beginning with the unscrupulous big boss Hedley Lamar, to the famous goofy Sheriff “black Bart” (that immortalized Cleavon Little in moviedom) and the professional gun slinging alcoholic “wacko kid” Jim all seem to be making spectacular comebacks in their animated alter egoes, along with the all too familiar Mongo, Taggart and Lilly Von Shtupp, and significant newcomer ‘Dirty Johnson’ who is voiced by none other than Steve Buscemi.

While the original was set around the theme of a wild-west boom town inhabitants trying to cash in on the railroad revenue, the supposed sequel continues with it’s parody of cowboy-isque swagger, with the bad guys taking over Indian land in hopes of striking gold,
and Bart and Jim stepping in to save the day.

Slotted to be an absolute delight for spoof lovers and connoisseurs of fine satire, that even in moments of loud slapstick vaudeville routines, doesn’t cease to be brilliantly incisive; Brooks’ signature anarchistic radicalism, while raising unsettling social questions continues to be a weirdly funny trail blazer in the comic genre.
