Biopic on Nelson Mandela’s wife facing legal threat
May 17th, 2010 - 5:25 pm ICT by ANILondon, May 17 (ANI): A new biopic on Nelson Mandela’s wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is facing legal threat.
Madikizela-Mandela’s lawyers have written to the producer of the film, Andre Pieterse, saying that she “would like to see the script and approve” before production begins.
The letter also contained the threat “of action that could stop production.”
“A lawyer’s letter came some weeks ago,” the BBC News quoted Pieterse as saying.
He said: “It was a benign letter and yet it contained the threat of an indictment, an interdict that could stop the picture. If the film maligns her in any way then there will be a legal basis for her to take action.”
However, Pieterse said he and director Darrell Roodt have decided the film would be based on a “well researched” screenplay “without any influence from any of the main characters”.
Madikizela-Mandela became popular during South Africa’s apartheid era.
She led the African National Congress (ANC) and campaigned for the release of her husband, who spent 27 years in jail. (ANI)
