Mar 19 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Alex Chilton, a rock musician who was known for work that varied from the soul songs of the Box Tops to the songs of his pop band Big Star, passed away on Wednesday in New Orleans at the age of 59. Although autopsy reports had not yet been released the cause of death was said to be a heart attack. His wife, Laura drove him to Tulane Medical Center after he complained of chest pains and chills. He became unconscious during the rise and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Now, just three days after his death, on during a concert which he was scheduled to play, Alex Chilton will be honored at the Southwest Music Conference in Austin TX. The concert is scheduled for Saturday night. It will feature the original drummer for Big Star, Jody Stephens, and also newer members Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer of the Posies acting as a house band, with original Big Star bassist Andy Hummel expected to sit in along with She & Him’s M. Ward, R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills, X’s John Doe and Chris Stamey of the dB’s.

Stephens, who was a long time bandmate of Chilton told reporters that he was still numb from the loss, but felt that the show would be a cool way to show his feelings, and to share some of Alex’s music. “Certainly where Alex and I connected over the years was through music, either in the studio or onstage, so I think that’s a great way for us all to tip our hats to Alex and celebrate his life,” he said.
