Tonight CBS’ 48 Hours ran a rebroadcast of the “Barbara Mullenix” story on 48 Hours. Barbara Mullenix was murdered by her 17 year old daughter Rachael Mullenix and her boyfriend.

Barbara was murdered in the early hours of the day on September 13, 2006. A butter knife was found seated in her eye socket when her body was found by the police. Rachael’s then boyfriend, 21, Ian Allen had confessed to the murder single handedly. Rachael was 17 when the incident took place.

Rachael Mullinix has been sentenced to 25 rigorous years in prison, after having been found guilty of the charges brought against her. The jury found her guilty of conspiring to murder her mother along with her boyfriend. Rachael and her boyfriend Ian had dumped the body of Barbara in Newport harbor and the two had then ran away to Louisiana. It was at Louisiana that they were arrested by the police.

Rachael had denied the charges against her vehemently saying that she had no hand in the murder of her mother. However, at the time of the brutal murder, she was present at home. Yet she had made no attempt to seek help or stop her boyfriend. No call for emergency was made to.

According to Rachael’s father and Barbara’s ex- husband, Barbara was a regular abusive alcoholic. What the defense had tried to put forth in the court was that Rachael was continuously abused by her mother when the latter was drunk. The regular pattern of abuses had somehow led to a development of a borderline personality in Rachael. She meekly followed whoever took the charge. So, when her boyfriend murdered her mother, she cowed down to him and started obeying him.
