Bangladeshi ‘Guerrilla’ a huge draw at Agartala film fest
December 26th, 2011 - 7:04 pm ICT by IANSAgartala, Dec 26 (IANS) Bangladeshi film “Guerrilla”, which recreates the valiant deeds of the freedom fighters in the 1971 liberation war, is attracting huge crowds at the week-long Agartala film festival.
Directed by renowned Bangladeshi theatre personality Nasiruddin Yousuf, “Guerrilla” has been adjudged as one of the best Bangladeshi movies ever made on the history of 1971 liberation war and is being screened in Kolkata, Agartala and New Delhi.
Yousuf told reporters here Monday: “A section of people in Bangladesh has been trying to ignore the glorious history of Bangladesh liberation war. This film was made to defeat such plan and to make aware the new generation about the nine-month long liberation war.”
“No novel was written, no movie was made and no document was prepared on the full history of the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war. If we enlighten the young generation about the war, they would be secular, liberal and democratic-minded,” Yousuf said.
The week-long 16th Agartala Film Festival, which was organised by northeast India’s largest film society “Cinedelve”, was inaugurated by Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar here Sunday night.
Several award winning films are being screened at the Agartala film festival.
“Guerrilla” was based on Syed Shamsul Haq’s novel “Nishiddho Loban” and Yousuf’s personal war-time experiences as a freedom fighter.
Released in April this year, the film recounts the gripping tale of young Bilkis, whose husband disappeared immediately after the war breaks out. As the war progresses, Bilkis is herself absorbed in the freedom struggle, and actively collaborates with the freedom fighters, hoping for the safe return of her husband.
“The film has depicted a daring attempt in re-creating the genocide and mass atrocities on women and children which happened during the Bangladesh war. I have tried to tell the stories of massacres which have never been told before,” said Yousuf.
The “Guerrilla” won the Best Asian Film Award at the 17th Kolkata Film Festival last month.
