June 4, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): FTII alumnus Avik Mukherjee, who is one of the best cinematographers in India, has finally turned director this June with his upcoming film Ekti Tarar Khonje-Stars Never Sleep. Avik is capable of capturing the world with his histrionics as seen before in Chokher Bali, Raincoat, Bunty aur Babli, Antaheen, Patalghar and Dosar.

The film will be releasing on 18th June across all cities of India and will also be released in USA and Canada by “Databazar Media Ventures’, which is an extension of USA’s leading online printer supplies retailer “Databazar.com’. National Award winning film-maker Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury will be the producer of the film. The director has assembled a wonderful ensemble of actors including Arpita Chowdhury, Shayon Munsi, Tanusree Shankar, Dhritiman Chatterjee, Biplab Chatterjee, Rudraneel Ghosh and many others. Top-notched Bengali actor Dev will be appear in a guest appearance. While Prabuddha Banerjee has composed the music, Chandranil and Anindya of Chandrabindu fame have written the lyrics. The film has five tracks with one Tagore song. Among them only one is lip synched and the others situational.

The songs of the film have a background quality that blend well with the the film. The director has used Armenian instruments, rock and distortion guitar as well as Greek percussion Moreover, the movie has been shot with the Red camera, so that the post-production work could be done in Kolkata instead of Mumbai.

The title of the film is quite metaphorical as it is about the literal journey of an ordinary boy to an extraordinary destination- Stardom. The story is about a young boy from a small suburban town, Chandanagore, who arrives in Kolkata to fulfill his dreams. He stays at a rented room of a sprawling mansion, which once took pride in its aristocratic roots. The house has a strange collection of tenants and an eccentric landlord, who quotes from Shakespeare, plays on the Esraaj and has a framed family tree hanging on a wall. He goes out at night and stays indoors the whole day. Here the boy meets girl, who lives with her school teacher aunt and the love angle comes in. The problems faced by a small town boy in a big city is depicted with sensitivity.
