Aug 24 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Being released this week is ‘Avatar: Special Edition’ in 3D which includes extra footage that has never been seen before in the extra scenes, and a soon coming DVD will be even longer., according to ‘The New York Post’.

A full nine minutes of never before seen footage comes along with the release of James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: Special Edition. Although nine minutes may not seem to be very much time, just a few seconds can add a great deal of depth and meaning to a scene in a movie. Nine minutes in the world of Pandora can change everything.

James Cameron had this to say, “Everybody’s been saying, ‘How come it’s only nine minutes?’ and speaking as an editor, I say, ‘Do you realize what it takes to get eight or nine minutes out of a movie? Taking 10 frames out here and two seconds out there? It probably took us six months to take out nine minutes out of the film.”

So what is in this footage? Well Cameron says that some of it is an extension of the love scene between Jake’s avatar, and Neytiri as they mingle their braids in a Pandora union under the scared ‘Tree of Souls’. It is still considered to be rated PG-13, however. “We do see a little bit more between Jake and Neytiri on their night of romance, though it’s absolutely nothing that changes the rating.”

More added scenes include more shois of the school which is ran by Dr. Grace Augustine. “That’s a very interesting set piece, about two minutes long, a rich scene with big action-adventure stuff and a hunt featuring these herd animals called Sturmbeests,” Cameron stated.

There is also more footage of the death of Tsu’tey. “You see him after the battle,” Cameron said. “Jake and Neytiri come to him, and it’s this incredibly powerful scene. In fact, I was practically booed out of the room when I told everybody I was going to take it out of the movie in the first place.”

And then there is another scene with political overtones called “The Drums of War” which Cameron says clarifies why humans wish to kill the Na’vi. He compares the battle to America’s decision to invade Iraq and says, “We had to provoke Saddam to do something stupid, and it’s like that with the humans invading Pandora. I felt when I was writing it that the Na’vi had to counter-react and do something that is called an atrocity that gave [humans] the moral right to go in and destroy and displace them. The additional footage is pretty short, but it fulfills that purpose.”

During the holiday season, Cameron says that an Avatar DVD edition will be released which will rival ‘Titanic’ in time. “It’s for those that don’t mind a movie that’s pushed to 257 minutes,” he grins. “That’s getting up into ‘Titanic’ territory, so it’s strictly for hyperfans.”

For those fans who are dying for the sequel, there is expected to be a little wait. It is not expected until at least 2014. “Right now, the thinking is that [Parts] Two and Three are going to be done together,” Cameron said. “They’ll be released separately, probably a year apart or maybe even two, but they’ll be done in a bunch. I’m mapping out the story line right now, so there’s a proper arc that plays out over two films but buttons nicely at the end of Two, so you don’t get this horrible second-act/end-of-’The Matrix’ feeling. You know, ‘I’ve just sat through a three-hour movie and f- -k-all happened at the end!’ “
