Dec 28, (THAINDIAN NEWS) “Avatar“, the James Cameron directed 3-D epic, has turned out to be the biggest grosser this year. Just in its second week at the theaters, the film has already topped all the twelve simultaneous releases, grossing $145 million in its second week itself, when the total collection at the box office was $278 million. In fact, this weeks gross collection has registered a 12% drop from the collection made in its opening week. In effect, in its first two weeks at the box office, “Avatar” has broken the record of the 2008 film, “The Dark Knight”, which grossed a total of $261.

Of course, this was more or less expected, what with all the visual effects and the hype of it being on of the most expensive movies ever made. What really determines the success of this extravaganza is the fact that it has managed to stay in the overseas market, and done exceptionally well, even in markets that do not receive American movies favorably. In fact, the release of “Avatar” has marked one of the biggest movie going weekends in the history of the American box office.

The total amount grossed by the film overseas is something around $405 million. All over the world, it has grossed about $617.3 million. What is very surprising about the total tally of the film is that it managed to make record sales despite releasing at a time when there were two consecutive theater closure days in a lot of markets around the world, Dec. 24 and 25. “Avatar” went ahead of even the latest release, “Sherlock Holmes”, which, too, was quite highly anticipated.
