Feb 3, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The wait is finally over for the movie lovers who were busy speculating about the probable Oscar nominations for 2010. On Tuesday morning, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences disclosed the nominations for the Oscar awards 2010. It is going to be a close race between Avatar and The Hurt Locker. The former is the magnum opus of maverick director James Cameron that is creating global box office records and has already bagged several prestigious awards including the Golden Globe. On the contrary, the Hurt Road directed by Kathryn Bigelow is a small scale gritty suspense movie that is yet to touch $13 million mark in terms of box office collection. Incidentally, the director of the Hurt Locker is the ex-wife of James Cameron and this makes the race to Oscar even more exciting.
Both the films have won nine Oscar nominations and it is difficult to predict which director will have the last laugh. While the box office success of Avatar places it far ahead of every movie released in 2009, one should not undermine the fact that The Hurt Locker has got oodles of critical acclaim. It outpaced Avatar in the recently held Director’s guild awards.
The industry experts are of the opinion that for either of these films it would be a close fight. While The Hurt Locker may score in the performance and screenplay section, the editing and direction of Avatar may fetch it the crown. The ‘Titanic’ director holds no animosity towards his ex-wife and he thinks that the nomination has come as a due to her.
