Washington, Feb 11 (ANI): Atonement,’ the film adaptation of Ian McEwan’s best-selling novel, won this year’s British Academy Film Award for Best Movie on Feb 10.

However, many of the winners at Britain’s showpiece movie awards, were non-British.

Brothers Joel and Ethan Coen of the U.S. bagged the best-director award for “No Country for Old Men,” a film about a cycle of murders sparked by a hunter’s discovery of drugs and cash, reports Variety.

Spanish actor Javier Bardem, who plays the bizarre killer in the film, won the best supporting actor trophy.

Daniel Day-Lewis took home the best-actor BAFTA, for playing the brutal American oil tycoon in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood.”

Little known French actress Marion Cotillard, who impersonated the late French singer Edith Piaf in “La Vie en Rose,” won the best actress trophy, beating the likes of Julie Christie for “Away From Her”, and Keira Knightley, for “Atonement.

“La Vie En Rose” finished with four awards, the most of any film at the BAFTAs, also scooping gongs for the Best Music, Costume Design and Make-up categories.

“Transformers” star Shia LaBeouf won the Orange Rising Star award, and Oscar-winning actor Anthony Hopkins was presented with the BAFTA fellowship.

Tilda Swinton was named Best Supporting Actress for “Michael Clayton.

The BAFTAs, which started in 1947, were held in a televised red-carpet gala at London’s Royal Opera House on Feb 10. (ANI)
