May 4, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): This piece of news is a rather morose one for all of us and, more so, for the admirers of Helen Wagner. The morose information that has arrived is that prominent actress, Helen Wagner, has breathed her last breath. Helen Wagner faced extensive recognition for her competent enactment of the character of Nancy Hughes on the soap ‘As the World Turns.’ She has passed away at the age of 91. Nancy Hughes was a rather good-natured personality.
The program’s New York-based production company, TeleNext Media Inc., released the proclamation that Wagner had died on Saturday. Helen Wagner had continued to be active in acting till her bereavement. Helen, in reality, communicated the very first words on the program, when it debuted in 1956.
Wagner enacted the same character on ‘As the World Turns’ for a total of a whopping 54 years. She is the proprietor of the Guinness World Record for doing so. She was the deserving recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences back in 2004.
Executive producer, Christopher Goutman, explicated that all the members of the squad of ‘As the World Turns’ are profoundly distraught by Helen Wagner’s demise. He expounded that she is and will be treasured and appreciated by generations of fans. He remarked, rather poignantly, that the team will miss her presence significantly. Nonetheless, he revealed that Helen will always stay as an inseparable star of ‘As the World Turns’. The heart and soul of the program will be incomplete without her.
In a dialogue in 1968 with New York Times, Wagner labeled Nancy a ‘tentpole’ personality. Fans often merged Wagner with the personality of Nancy that she depicted. The devotees bequeathed communications to Wagner that grumbled about Nancy’s homemaking or what they viewed as her unwarranted prying in her kids’ lives.
