Aretha Franklin New York City, Nov 30 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Aretha Franklin sang the song ‘Respect’ in her 60’s soul album, and after almost 5 decades, it has now been voted as the greatest female song of all time. There was a poll conducted by alcohol company Hummingbird100, which received 62,000 votes.

Apparently this greatest female song poll was conducted after the Triple J Hottest 100 of all time was conducted, in which not a single female artist made the cut. There was a huge furore over this issue so Hummingbird100 conducted an exclusive greatest female song of all time polls, in response to the earlier anomaly.

The Hummingbird100 poll spanned five glorious decades, from the classics Etta James’ At Last and Nancy Sinatra’s These Boots Are Made for Walkin’ to Dolly Parton’s Jolene, Blondie’s Heart of Glass, Portishead’s Glorybox and Pink’s Funhouse.

However there were numerous great singers who ought to be on this list, but unfortunately weren’t there were, Nico, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, the Supremes, Nina Simone, the Pretenders, Patti Smith, PJ Harvey, Hole, the Breeders and Bjork, while Australians Magic Dirt, Little Birdy, Renee Geyer, Olivia Newton-John and the Waifs.

Rolling Stone editor-in-chief Mathew Coyte said: ”We’re excited to see an all-female top 100. It doesn’t make sense that female artists are under-represented on music lists. Some of the greatest - not to mention highest selling - artists of all time are female. We can only assume that these lists are voted by a predominantly male audience.”
