Madrid, May 13 (IANS/EFE) Spanish studio Vertice 360 and Quinta Communications, owned by Frenchman Tarak Ben Ammar, have signed an agreement with Spanish actor-director Antonio Banderas’ Green Moon Productions to co-produce his next two films, “Automata” and “Solo”.

“Automata”, to be directed by Spaniard Gabe Ibanez, is a science-fiction epic that will offer a vision of the moment when human civilisation is contacted by artificial intelligence.

Banderas will play Jacq Vaucan, an insurance agent with a robotics company who during a routine investigation discovers something that will have profound consequences for the future of humanity.

“Automata”, a $35 million project, will be shot on location in Tunisia and Egypt beginning late this year.

Meanwhile, filming of “Solo”, in which Banderas will produce, star and direct, will start in 2012.

That psychological/science-fiction thriller will tell the story of a soldier who suffers from post-traumatic stress syndrome and becomes immersed in a world of nightmares and hallucinations.

Banderas said in a statement that the alliance among the three companies represents “a great opportunity for European cinema”.
