Another Hollywood strike in the offingJune 20th, 2008 - 4:47 pm ICT by David M N James
The Screen Actors Guild is under pressure to secure a contract before the June 30 deadline, to avert another crippling Hollywood strike.
Labor unions including the Directors Guild of America and the Los Angeles chapter of the AFL-CIO gave Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa a shot in the arm when they supported the call. The conceptual agreement struck recently between SAG’s fellow union, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
The 70,000 members of AFTRA were mailed ballots to ratify the deal on June 17; those are due back July 8. If the calls are not heard, Hollywood will face a damning revolt and it will be all sham. Already, indications of possible strikes are showing and the speedy resolve is being sought by involved parties.
