Annie Lennox Named As UN AIDS Spokesperson

June 2 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Annie Lennox has been named as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations in an effort to upgrade her fight against HIV and AIDS, and combat the deadly disease that takes so many lives a year.

Formerly a star of the band, ‘The Eurythmics’, Annie Lennox has been a leading voice among celebrities which have been fighting against the disease for almost twenty years. She set up a campaign against AIDS called the ‘Sing Campaign’ in the year 2003 which was designed to educate women and children in promote health care for those who had been affected by the virus. She was also named a ‘Woman of Peace’ by the Nobel Peace Laureates for her work in raising the awareness for the deadly virus.

Lennox appeared on television in April, dressed in a T shirt which read “HIV Positive” which was to show her solidarity with AIDS sufferers all over the world. As she was appointed the UN AIDS spokesperson on Wednesday she stated, “The daily brutality faced by millions of women and girls is unacceptable. If we are to end the cycle of human devastation triggered by the AIDS epidemic, we must address the rights of women and girls and challenge their second class citizen status, which puts them at greater risk of HIV.”
