Anna Nicole Smith criminal case to begin Wednesday

LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) — Criminal proceedings against lawyer and former companion of Anna Nicole Smith, Howard K. Stern, will begin Wednesday, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Stern, along with co-conspirators Drs. Sandeep Kapoor and Khristine Eroshevich, is accused of obtaining and administering prescription drugs to Smith over the course of their relationship, which eventually led to her overdose and death in 2007.
“The sudden death of Anna Nicole is a lesson for all of young Hollywood and the so-called doctors and support teams that surround them,” former prosecutor and private attorney Janice Brenman said.
“It has become common practice for doctors to write prescriptions for celebrity patients under aliases so that their drug abuse remains confidential and the problem continues to grow. From a legal standpoint, those who facilitate this practice are just as guilty as those who prescribe and administer the drugs.”
“Just because this behavior is common does not make it morally, ethically or – most importantly – legally right. Regardless of perceived justification, drug facilitation cannot be tolerated,” Brenman added.
