London, Aug 21 (IANS) Hollywood star Jennifer Aniston jokingly called herself a “retard” on a TV show, drawing the ire of a group for the disabled.
The former “Friends” star used the word on the show “Live With Regis And Kelly” and the rights group has accused her of dehumanising those who are physically or mentally challenged, reports thesun.co.uk.
“Yes, I play dress up! I do it for a living, like a retard!” Aniston had remarked on the show.
Her remark has angered people at the Special Olympics, a global organisation that runs bi-annual games for sportspersons with disabilities.
“The pervasive use of the R-word, even in an off-the-cuff self-deprecating manner, dehumanises people with intellectual disabilities and perpetuates painful stereotypes that are a great source of suffering and negative stigma,” said an official from the organisation.
