American Idol: Will J-Lo Go Home?

Feb 25 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Karen Rodriuez was the first to perform on American Idol. She had made a special connection with Jennifer Lopez which strengthened throughout the competition. She sang songs which were close to Jennifer’s heart, and seemed to really impress the judges. But Jennifer had fallen apart when she had to send so many contestants home already. Karen, however, was not one of them, she is in the top twelve girls.

Robbie, who is seventeen year old, knew he had to have a flawless performance, since the competition was so fierce this season. He sang “Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word” and pulled it off perfectly. He is also one of the top 24.

It took many cuts to get from the top 40 to the top 24, lots of tears, and even anger. Jennifer Lopez broke down when she had to tell Chris Medina that he did not make it through. Chris is the one whose fiance was in a horrible wreck and became severely disabled after suffering a traumatic brain injury. Juliana Ramos is now in a wheelchair, and Chris and her mom is her full time care provider. The heart breaking story of their love, and Chris’s battle to become a star had gotten to Jennifer and sending him home was more than she could handle.

J-Lo shared with Ryan Seacrest on his radio show how it felt, how it hurt. “I can’t do this anymore. This is all new to me. “I’m used to having a script in a movie, or a big performance with a cane and a microphone, and I have all kinds of stuff going on … You’re [not always] getting me. This is the first experience … where I feel like people are getting to know who I am as a person,” she said. “It’s such a vulnerable place to be.”

It is not the end of the road for Chris, however. He has already been chosen to be on the ‘Tonight Show’ Friday night.

It was very clear that having to crush people’s dreams was too much for Jennifer to handle. The star did manage to pull herself together to finish the show, and more contestants made their way through, with some going forward, and others going home.

But Chris was not the only sob story on the show. The producers, of course, want to make the show interesting, and even heart breaking if it draws in the viewers. The contestants who choose to share their stories give depth to the show which would not be there without those tales.

Contestants like Stefano Langone, who was also severely injured in a car badly that the paramedics believed he was dead. When he sang ‘I Heard it Through the Grapevine’ during the auditions, Steven Tyler told him, “You survived the accident for a reason, and I’m going to tell you why — you’re going to Hollywood!”

James Durbin shared his story as well. He never knew his dad, although he may have gotten his musical talents from him. His dad was a bass player in a band who died of a drug overdose. James has Tourette’s and Asperger’s syndromes and was often bullied and picked at in school. James has a child of his own now, a baby, but cannot even afford to purchase diapers because he is unemployed.

Travis Orlando was raised in a Bronx neighborhood, full of murders and crimes, and ended up in a shelter when his dad lost his job. He is one of the ones who were sent home already. Ellen Anne Reed made it through to Hollywood, even though Steven voted no. She lost her home a week before auditions. Paris Tussin, however, was another sad story who went home early. She had a baby at the age of 18 which was born with hydrocephalus. She chose to keep the baby even though she knew beforehand that the child could be born with many defects. Aside from hearing problems, the baby girl is healthy, but Paris went home after the group round.

As the night ended, Jennifer was still hanging in there. Perhaps it will be easier for her when the audience and fans are choosing who goes home, and taking the responsibility off of the judges. There were twelve men and twelve women who made it through to the top 24, and they will go on to Idol’s main stage to be judged by us at home. Those names can be found here.
