American Idol: Top 6 PerformApril 28th, 2010 - 4:11 pm ICT by Angela Kaye Mason
Apr 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Ryan opened the show by sharing that last week’s “Idol Gives Back” raised over 45 million dollars! That is a terrific feat especially in these hard times. Last night, as American Idol celebrated the music of Shania Twain, it is less than a month until this season’s “American Idol” is crowned. Shania was on the show, to mentor for the contestants, and she said that it will be difficult, with so many diverse types of singers to try to do her songs.
Lee went first with Shania’s hit “Still The One.” He transformed the song from country to rock, and it was quite good. Randy felt he did a good job making it his own. Ellen felt he did better than ‘a pretty good job’ and always does a great job of making songs his own. Kara said that the sound of his voice on every song makes it feel very relevant, and he did a good job. Simon agreed with everything that everybody said and felt it was ‘absolutely the best song out of Shania’s collection.”
Michael decided to sing “It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing” and he did a terrific job as well. It would not be easy to choose a winner this season, if I had to, although I just don’t feel that this season had the magic which was present in other seasons. Randy felt Mike really found his zone. Ellen said she was a tiny bit nervous with him taking on the song, but he sounded like Luther Vandross. She felt it was beautiful. Kara felt he was very connected when he sang. Simon said that it did sound like Luther, but felt the performance was a little bit ‘wet’ and Randy asked what he meant by ‘wet’. Simon said, “Well it was the opposite of dry.” Then he added that it was a bit ‘girly’ for Big Mike. “It was written by a girl!!” the other judges chimed in. “Well, that could be why,” Simon chuckled. Shania was in tears, and said that he did a great job.
Casey sang the song “Don’t” and said that he was more excited about this performance than any of them. “It’s a singing song, I don’t think I’ve sang yet…” And he was absolutely awesome! Up until now, he was just another pretty face in my book, but he really did a great job with this song. And there were tears in his eyes when he finished. Wow.
Randy said that it was one of the best Casey James performances ever. Ellen stated,” I was going to say the exact same thing, I actually think it was your best performance to date. Kara said that he did not hide or cover up anything, he was raw and vulnerable and great. Simon agreed with Randy (and everyone else) that this was Casey’s best performance so far. Shania screamed,” You totally nailed it!” after giving Casey a hug.(Simon had actually suggested Casey kiss her on the lips in gratitude, but she managed to gracefully make it a hug.)
Crystal sang “No One Needs To Know” and said that it was a message to her boyfriend and “He’ll man up one of these days.” He’d better hurry, cause this girl is going places! Randy kinda liked it, but it wasn’t his favorite performance of Crystal’s but it was good. Ellen said there is nothing Crystal can’t do, although it wasn’t her favorite but that it like saying it wasn’t my favorite color of the rainbow. Kara said it wasn’t her best, but it was very good. Crystal said it wasn’t the biggest, but the biggest isn’t always the best. Then Simon piped in saying “We don’t like Crystal this week, and this is the only week where I haven’t actually liked your performance.” Crystal came back and said that she enjoyed doing the song, and she is fine with it.
Aaron came next with “You’ve Got A Way” and again…did a great job! Randy said this was definitely Aaron’s area of expertise. Ellen said, “This is gonna be tough because everybody is doing well. “I still can’t get over the fact that you are 16 years old (and Aaron interrupted her to say’17, I’m 17 now’)” Kara said it was good. Simon said that the last few weeks Aaron had really struggled and tonight he was a different artist, it felt sincere and believable. “Well done.”
And then it was time for Siobhan to sing “Any Man of Mine” and she has the attitude to pull it off. She sounded really country, which was a surprise coming from Siobhan, but she pulled it off, and rocked the end with her high reaching vocals! Randy loved it, the whole ‘punk country look’ and all. Ellen said “Way to pull the ‘Shania Twain’ into the station…way to end the show. Kara stated, “Guess who’s back-Siobhan” and Simon said it was fun and good.
It was a fun, awesome show with a great deal of talent and picking just one is very hard. Who will America send home? Tune in tonight and see!
