On Tuesday night the final three contestants on American Idol performed two songs each and then it was up to the viewers to choose which one among Danny Gokey, Kris Allen and Adam Lambert was to be sent packing home. Meanwhile the top three finalists went back to their home towns for a visit. Danny went to Milwaukee, Kris went home to Conway, Arkansas and Lambert went to San Diego. Video footage of the heroes’ homecoming showed fans erupting in rallies and parades to bring their singing sensations home. They ran after the limos of their heroes, screaming, waving, and bringing back their heroes in the truest manner.

And then America decided. Over 88 million votes were cast and only a million separated the final two contestants. The votes were counted up and tabulated and the one to be sent home for good turned out to be Danny Gockey. As a parting shot, he took the center-stage and performed “You are so beautiful” as Kara and Paula fought back their tears. He spoke about where he was ten months ago when he lost his wife to post-surgery complications and how to distract himself from his grief he has auditioned for American Idol three weeks later. His vocals remained solid over the weeks but his song selections were not very impressive and judge Simon Cowell said repeatedly that he hated it when Danny danced. Yet, everyone had predicted that Danny will make it to the season finale and he was a sentimental favorite after his wife’s death.
