American Idol Heats UpMarch 4th, 2009 - 9:44 pm ICT by GD
American Idol got a bit more interesting today with several contestants making a very convincing bid to go to the Top 12.
Lil Rounds rendered a very powerful take on Mary J. Blige’s “Be Without You.” She has a great voice and seems like a judge favorite, and it was small wonder that Simon Cowell thought she was brilliant. He told her that she had brilliant prospects in the show and raved on about her voice.
Rounds stood out as the only female on a night ruled by the boys. Scott MacIntyre, the visually challenged contestant from Arizona put up a such solid performance of Bruce Hornsby’s “Mandolin Rain” that Kara commented ,”You move mountains,” after his performance. Randy agreed Scott had some pitchy bits saying, “It wasn’t the most perfect vocal…but you could feel the passion pouring out.” Simon Cowell was not too impressed but Paula Abdul said she was happy and proud and the best compliment to the first blind contestant came from Judge Dread who said, “There are better singers in the competition, but in a sea of forgettable performances, yours is the only one I’ll remember.”
The third spot could be a toss up between Jorge Nunez, Ju’Not Joyner and even Von Smith. Von Smith beamed after performing Marvin Gaye’s “You’re All I need To Get By” and was compared to Clay Aiken. Paula had said Jorge to say something so she could hear his accent but Simon Cowell pointed out to her that she was probably patronizing him.
