America Ferrera feels more at ease as Ugly BettyNovember 17th, 2007 - 4:43 pm ICT by admin
London, Nov 17 (ANI): Ugly Betty star America Ferrera has revealed that she feels more confident when she is made up as her alter ego, Betty Suarez, a character donning thick-rimmed specs, frizzy wig, braces and frumpy clothes.
She said that the famous character, based on the Colombian soap Yo Soy Betty La Fea, made her feel less awkward.
The stunning Los Angeles-born actress says, “I’m less self-conscious as Betty.”
“When I walk down a red carpet, I never feel more self-conscious than in my own skin. When I get into Betty’s skin, it all goes away, she added.
Betty works as a secretary on Mode fashion magazine, and does not care about her nerdy clothes and rounded hips, even though she works with New York’s most stylish, stick-thin women.
America says that she can perfectly identify with Bettys carefree and happy-go-lucky attitude, reports the Mirror.
“Having a perfect body doesn’t fix all your problems or make you love yourself more,” she said.
“To me, it’s all about being comfortable in your own skin,” she added.
However, America said that she is not free from insecurities regarding her looks.
“I never liked my legs - God forbid if a picture of me in a bathing suit ever appears in a magazine,” she said.
“Once the braces go in, Betty comes to life. When I’m Betty, I never have to think about what my shirt is doing or if this is a good angle. There is an enormous amount of freedom as an actor to have all that lifted off your shoulders.
“Especially for a woman - to not have to think about what you look like, just focus on the character.
“The truth is, I don’t feel like Betty’s that ugly - she’s cute and unique. The show is about watching her grow and blossom, and not just on the outside, she added. (ANI)
