james spaderThis is no more a secret that the very talented “Boston Legal” star James Spader is supposed to be a part of the stellar cast of the upcoming Broadway venture of “Race”, that is a project of David Mamet’s. As it is with most of Mamet’s project, this one too is hid behind a thick veil of secrecy that is much too intense and impenetrable than all the secretive policies adopted by the Vatican during the Papal election in Rome.

Mamet does not like any bit of his upcoming projects to be leaked and make way to the media until it is staged on the Broadway platform. This time around however, Mamet seemed to be beaten at his strategy of holding back all information regarding “Race”; as some details have made their way to the members of the press.

The lead actors James Spader, Kerry Washington and Richard Thomas have strictly been instructed not to divulge any bit of information about the plot or the characters in any interviews given to the media. So much so that, Kerry Washington was found to say recently, “I don’t know how much I’m allowed to say outside of it being a brand new play from David Mamet.” The only other thing the actor was willing to add was, “But it’s interesting.” Even the designers working on the team of “Race” had to diligently follow the secrecy code.

Leaked information about Spader’s debut Broadway venture points to the fact that the play has some similarities to “Speed-The-Plow.” The story focuses on two Hollywood producers (one white and one black) and one legal assistant, who comes in to the picture with a secret agenda. Spader is supposedly playing the role of the white Hollywood producer and the Washington, the legal assistant. The lead for the other producer’s character has not been finalized yet.
