Nov. 3 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Alanis Morissette sang at the Phillies’ Citizen Bank Park on the night of the 1st of November, Monday. However, she admitted that she was no follower of the Phillies, and that her allegiances lay with the Yankees. While watching the game, however, she supported the Bronx Bombers. The singer had just the previous day run in the ING New York City Marathon in which she had competed in order to raise money that was to be donated to the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust. She had been asked to a a visit to the game and sing the national anthem prior to the match. There was hope among her fans that she would sing her hit song “Oh Canada” as well.
The nine time Grammy winner sang the “Star Spangled Banner” prior to Game 5 of the Major League Baseball World Series. The match was to be held between the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Yankees. It was certainly hoped that Morissette would not botch up the event like many other singer before her. She said that she felt that music and sports have the ability to bring people together irrespective of political and social differences.
Morissette carried off the song with characteristic elan. There was evident ease in her posture as she belted out the “Star Spangled Banner”. Her allegiances were not to be seen anywhere on her persona as she performed amidst cheers and fireworks. There was some evident dislike from the gallery of spectators who felt that a Canadian born had nothing to do with a game where no Canadian team was participating. Most of the onlookers, however, enjoyed the show and cheered on with her and joined her too.
