Al Pacino to star in new adaptation of King Lear

May 15, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Actor Al Pacino will team up again with writer-director Michael Radford for a new adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s master tragedies, King Lear. The duo worked earlier in screen adaptation of another famous Shakespearean drama, The Merchant of Venice, in which Pacino played Shylock.

King Lear will also have Producer Barry Navidi and director of photography Benoit Delhomme who worked on Merchant of Venice.

The film, which is in pre-production, will deal with the story of an aging king and a major error in his judgment which sparks a tragic power feud when he offers to split his kingdom between his three daughters.

Casting for other important characters are yet to be done.

Radford plans to shoot the film entirely in the UK in spring 2011.The film is being financed completely with private equity, UK tax rebate (Coutts Bank), and is being put together in association with Belgium/E-Motion fund.

King Lear has been made in film earlier also, most notably by French director Jean-Luc Godard.
