WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — Actor Sean Penn in an interview on CNN Thursday night said to be “suspicious” about singer Wyclef Jean’s run to become President of Haiti.
“Right now I worry that this is a campaign that is more about a vision of lying around the world talking to people as [Wyclef Jean] said,” Penn, who has been very active in the recovery efforts that have been taking place in Haiti since the devastating earthquake last January, stated.
Co-founding the J/P Haitian Relief Organization, Penn has been helping with a 55,000-person tent. In the interview, he said to be in constant contact with a 24-year-old woman who is facing a life and death situation because she did not have adequate treatment of a tooth infection, showing his involvement in the recovery efforts.
“What the Haitian people need now is a leader who genuinely is willing to sacrifice,” the actor continued. “I haven’t seen or heard anything of him in these last six months that I’ve been in Haiti.”
“I think he is an important voice. I hope he doesn’t sacrifice that voice by taking the eye off of the very devastating realities on the ground, and the very difficult strategic future that it has got to bringing itself back together,” Penn continued, noting that he was not accusing Wyclef o being an opportunist as he personally does not know him.
“This is somebody who’s going to receive an enormous amount of support from the United States, and I have to say I’m very suspicious of it, simply because he, as an ambassador at large, has been virtually silent. For those of us in Haiti, he has been a non-presence,” Penn added.
Wyclef Jean has been facing allegations of mishandling $400,000 donated for Haiti through the singer’s Yele Haiti foundation, and taking the money for himself. “That has to be looked into,” Penn said. “I’ve been there. I know what $400,000 could do for these people’s lives,” he added.
“I want to see someone who is really willing to sacrifice and not just someone that I personally saw with a vulgar entourage of vehicles that demonstrated a wealth in Haiti that in context I felt was a very obscene demonstration.”
