Mar 15 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Peter Graves, perhaps known best for his roles in the 1960’s television series, Mission Impossible, and the two movies entitled, Airplane, died on Sunday at the age of 83.
According to reports by CNN, the actor collapsed in his car while pulling into his driveway on Sunday. His daughter found him and tried performing CPR, to no avail. Although the actor was said to be in good health, he is reported to have died of natural causes.
Peter Graves was born Peter Aurness on March 18, 1926. During his lifetime, he made over 70 movies, and quite a few television show. The long career began in 1942 with his debut in the movie, Winning Your Wings which he was not accredited for. He then moved to Hollywood to be near his brother, James Aurness who is best known as that star of Gunsmoke a long running television western. It was then that Peter Aurness changed his name to Peter Graves, to avoid confusion with his brother.
With a number of other shows and films under his belt, Graves’ big break came when he was cast into the role of James Phelps in the CBS series Mission Impossible which ran from 1967 to 1973, and then again on ABC from 1988 to 1990. Graves won an Golden Globe in 1971 for Best Actor for his job on the show. The show was later made into a movie which starred Tom Cruise.
After his role in the two Airplane movies, Peter Graves seemed to stay away from movie roles, starring in a couple of television shows. He hosted the A&E documentary Biography for twelve years, starting in 1989. Afterwards, he was seen in a few TV series shows such as House and 7th Heaven. He will be greatly missed by the entertainment world.
