Academy award means nothing: Godard

Francis Ford Coppola London, Nov 16 (IANS) Legnedary director Jean-Luc Godard has brushed off his prestigious Academy Awards lifetime achievement accolade, insisting the honour means “nothing” to him.

The French-Swiss star was lauded at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Governors Awards in Los Angeles Saturday, but he was unable to accept the trophy in person as he didn’t want to fly to the US. Godard, 79, thinks it’s “strange” he was honoured at the glitzy event - as the award is meaningless to him, reports imdb.com.

“(The award means) nothing. If the Academy likes to do it, let them do it. But I think it’s strange. I asked myself, ‘Which of my films have they seen? Do they actually know my films? The award is called The Governor’s Award. Does this mean that (Arnold) Schwarzenegger gives me the award?’,” he said.

Moviemaker Francis Ford Coppola, historian Kevin Brownlow and actor Eli Wallach were also honoured at the ceremony.
