July 17, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The ABC has at last come up with an official statement on the controversial HIV/AIDS discussion on “The View” that was aired last month. The gay rights group GLAAD along with some other supporters of the gay communities are, however, not happy with the statement and have called it “evasive.” GLAAD will continue with its “Call to Action” campaign. The statement comes after the gay media-watchdog group that took offense of the statement issued a plea for ABC talk show to correct comments made by “The View” guest host D.L. Hughley and co-host Sherri Shepherd during the June 22 episode.
ABC in its statement maintained that during the June 22 episode of the show that discussed blood donation and the transmission of HIV/AIDS, the guest moderator on the show expressed his own view and interpretation of the HIV data available. It said that it was the moderator’s interpretation of the data about one of the way the “virus can be transmitted.” However, it also added that for the last 13 years in the talk show many voices and opinions have been contributing to the conversation and that the channel expects it would “continue as long as ‘The View’ is on the air”.
It was the statement by guest host D.L. Hughley that had infuriated the gay supporters. The guest host held the gay African-American men responsible for the increase in the number of HIV cases among straight African-American women. However, the Center for Disease Control has publicly stated that the spread of HIV by closeted black men to straight black women is a predominant myth.
