“A Streetcar Named Desire” To Be Staged Once Again

scnd Sep 26, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Fans of Tennessee Williams’ renowned theatrical work, “A Streetcar Named Desire”, could not have asked for more. The play would be performed by Emerald City Players troupe, in the Emerald City stage, under the direction of Kathy Sturm.

This masterpiece of 1947 was first staged in 1948, gaining a lot of popularity and applause as an immortal masterpiece. It was also adopted into a film version starring Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh in 1952. Therefore, according to director Kathy Sturm, rejuvenating the celebrated characters like Blanche DuBois, is quite challenging in itself, considering the predominating expectations of the people from this new version. There are every possibilities, that this version will be subjected to a lot of comparisons and criticisms, as the success this piece has witnessed before, is bound to pave way for such reactions.

The story is centered around the life of a psychotic woman, Blanche DuBois, whose romantic illusions make her abandon the realities of life, and secludes her from them. Although she shifts to New Orleans to stay her expecting sister Stella, after being castrated from Mississippi, for seducing her seventeen-year-old student. However, fate leads her to self delusion and insanity, in the presence of her brother-in-law, Stanley. The new star caste includes artists like Jody Hepp, Mark Schuliger and Ryan, belonging to Emerald City Player Troupe.

The theater is still on its preproduction stage, although, the star caste has been decided. Director Kathy Sturm, has also started with the rehearsals, as the show will make its debut performance in the first half of October, and tentatively on October 1,2,8 and 9 at Emerald City stage.
