‘A Day in the Life’ lyrics to be auctioned

April 30, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): ‘A Day in the Life’, the final track of Beatles’ iconic album, ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’, will be auctioned at Sotheby’s New York on June 18. The song was ranked 26th by the Rolling Stone magazine on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

The double-sided single sheet of paper written by John Lennon is expected to fetch a whopping amount of $700,000.They are being sold by an unidentified collector, an American, who purchased the sheet in 1992 at Sotheby’s. The auction house articulated that the collector desires to use the earnings to procure a vineyard.

It includes cross-outs and corrections done by the band on its most famous musical masterpiece. According to Dan Abernethy, spokesman of Sotheby, the first side features a rough draft written in script with a black felt marker and blue ballpoint pen, with a few annotations in red ink. The other side of the page, whose ink is also vivid and vibrant, is written in block letters.

The album, when first released in 1967, became a gigantic hit and remained on the top of the charts for numerous weeks. Andy Greene, Rolling Stone’s assistant editor, opined that the song and the album deserve higher praise, considering it was the last album the Beatles collectively worked on.

The album is considered a milestone in the career of the Beatles and purportedly transformed them from pop icons to one of the 20th century’s foremost artists.
