June 21, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): The 60 minutes had a special report out which contained stories of how the dead and famous like Marilyn Monroe, Elvis and the recently deceased Michael Jackson continue to make money even after they have departed from the earth.
This is neither unusual nor a recent phenomenon. The dead in fact, continue to make a living for themselves even as they rest in their graves. Extraordinarily, they actually earn much more dead than alive! There are even an increasing number of people willing to promote them as managers and agents. This seems to catching on as quite a lucrative profession.
Michael Jackson, the legendary pop singer had made himself a cool $100 million just after his death and is all set to make an equal amount from the sale of his records and other sources, agree his lawyers. The singer had been reported to have in debt at the time of his death.
Mark Roesler, an agent representing the rich and famous of Hollywood has an enviable 62 clients to his name. However, he points out that most of them have been dead and gone for years but continue to provide a good living for their representatives. His client list sounds almost like the Who’s who of Hollywood and includes Ingrid Bergman, Marilyn Monroe, Natalie Wood and many more. Baseball legends like Lou Gehrig as well as the singing sensation Ella Fitzgerald.
However, their modus operandi is not all that different from representing living stars. However, it is impossible to have them appear for shows or to ask for their permission. But the permission definitely has to be taken from another source.
