60 Minutes: Gustavo Dudamel Has A Musical Mission

May 17, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): While conversing about his music with ‘60 Minutes’ correspondent, Bob Simon, the Venezuelan conductor and violinist, Gustavo Dudamel, divulged that music is something that he always requires just like air and water. Dudamel stated that he has to always be around the enchantment of music.

The 29-year-old maestro possesses a great way of conducting his orchestra. He not only entices his musicians but entertains and motivates them also.

When quizzed about what he desires to construct for the future, Dudamel responded that he yearns to manufacture an enhanced life through melodious music. He articulated that he desires to grow amazing humans, one at a time through music.

Dudamel, who first took up violin at the age of 10, initially conducted the Gothenburg Symphony at the BBC Proms in 2005. He was named Principal Conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony and continues to hold on to his position with the Simón Bolívar National Youth Orchestra. Along with this, he is, presently, the music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Los Angeles, California. He is also the artistic director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar in Caracas, Venezuela.

He is featured in the documentary motion picture, Tocar y Luchar, which covers El Sistema. In 2007, he and the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar attained the WQXR Gramophone Special Recognition Award in New York City.
