41st NAACP Image Awards: “Precious” A Big Hit

naacp1Los Angeles, Feb 27, (THAINDIAN NEWS) On Friday, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) held its 41st annual grand NAACP Image awards, which saw a grand presence and some of the outstanding performers on screen holding the awards.

The “Precious: Based on the novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” which has since 2009 won many accolades at different film festivals and award ceremonies got the due at NAACP too. The film managed to win six awards which include best movie, best independent movie, best actress, best supporting actress, best director. The debut actress Gabourey Sidibe won the best actress award for the above mentioned film. A tearful Gabourey Sidibe dedicated her award to “all Precious girls everywhere”. The director of the film, Lee Daniels too got emotional while receiving the prestigious award and recalled the struggle which he had faced for the film. The best supporting actress award went to Mo’Nique who had amazingly made the role of the wicked mother of the obese teen real on screen. Geoffrey Fletcher added one more award to the above mentioned film as he got the award for the best writing.

Others who had made it big at the NAACP Image Awards included Morgan Freeman who was honored with the best actor award for his performance as Nelson Mandela in the movie “Invictus”. The hip hop singer Wyclef Jean, who took active part to restore Haiti after the earthquake, was awarded the Vanguard trophy. The best female artist and the best album award went to R&B’s Mary.J. Blige for her “Stronger With Each Tear”. The “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne” remained an outstanding winner in the comedy series NAACP awards as it bagged four awards.
