ooLos Angeles, March 6, (THAINDIAN NEWS) On Friday, Mar 5, the 25th Film Independent Spirit Award took place which like every year handed over the prestigious awards to the independent films. The Independent Spirit award showered honors on the film “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” which recently grabbed many accolades and awards at the NAACP Image Awards. The film received 5 awards on Friday night.

Like the NAACP Image Awards, the film here too grabbed the best feature film award. The best director award went to Lee Daniels who was overwhelmed with the accolades that the film is receiving. As was being anticipated, the best female lead Actress award went to fabulous Gabourey Sidibe who had made the pathos of the Harlem girl look true on the silver screen. Though Mo’Nique played a sinister role in the film, the jury was not sinister against her and gave her the rightful award of the best supporting actress. “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” also got the first screenplay award to Geoffrey Fletcher.

The film which tells the struggle of a teenage Harlem girl who had to suffer a lot of domestic violence at a very tender age has won national and international attention. How she creates her imaginary world to survive in the brutal world, is beautifully portrayed in the film. The best actor award went to Jeff Bridges for his performance in the film “Crazy Heart”. The supporting male actor award was handed over to Woody Harrelson for “The Messenger”. Unlike previous years when the award ceremony was held on the Saturday night before Oscars, this year it was held on Friday night.
