Sandra Bullock Bangkok, Feb 25 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Nominees: Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side; Helen Mirren, The Last Station; Carey Mulligan, An Education; Gabourey Sidibe, Precious; Meryl Streep, Julie & Julia.

A few old favorites, a long shot, and two attention-grabbing newbies make up the list for Best Actress for 2010. When talking about class acts like Streep and Mirren, who have both been nominated and ignored many times over by the Oscars and others, it’s a hard thing to predict; despite their eminence, they’re both sort of dark horses and, just like in calculus, cancel each other out.

The real question is whether Bullock will get the prize for her moving performance in The Blind Side, as many predict she will, or if it will go to a newcomer. If the Academy goes with Bullock, it will be no big shock, but they might just surprise everyone and go with the newcomer. If they do, I predict first-timer Sidibe for her emotional tour-de-force in Precious, but the smart money is on Bullock – barely.

Greg Jorgensen has been scouring the back alleys and lurking in the movie theaters of Bangkok since 2001. His biggest regret is getting a Gold Class ticket for Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones.
