‘100 Greatest Artists of All Time’ On VH1
September 8th, 2010 - 6:42 pm ICT by GD ( 115 comments )By Meena Kar
Sep 8, (THAINDIAN NEWS) VH1 started the ‘100 Greatest Artist of All Time’ special on Monday and the fans were treated to a countdown that had all their favorite artists. Though the top 5 artists are yet to be revealed the rest of the 95 have been given the ranks and some of them are sure to surprise the fans. For example, pop icon George Michael has been given the 87th position and soul legend Sade is 50th on the list. Another interesting aspect of the list highlighted by some of the music bloggers on the web is that the top 20 artists include just one female artists -Madonna.
U2 features on the list of VH1’s ‘100 Greatest Artists of All Time’ in the 19th position. Adam Clayton from the legendary Irish rock band was also seen on the show hosted by Jim Shearer. Apart from him, several other artists like rapper 50 Cent, Nelly Furtado and Adam Levine were also seen on the show weighing in with their votes. The list was compiled with the help of contemporary artists and most reports indicate that ‘The Beatles’ will be heading it when the results are revealed. Mick Jagger’s ‘Rolling Stones’ is also expected to be in the top 3 with Michael Jackson and Led Zeppelin also in the hunt.
The 4 day special on VH1 will continue till Thursday and once the final list is released, music fans can add it to their collection for the time being. The episodes have become a rage on the web with websites holding debates among the fans about the credibility of the list. With Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix and Prince making it to the top ten but not the top 5, the final episode of the special is surely highly anticipated.

Without doubt Elvis Presley should have topped this Poll. It is an insult to his memory by those ‘musicians’ eligible to vote.
Without Elvis none of the other artists would have made it.
September 9th, 2010 at 4:59 am
Maybe Elvis isn´t the No.1 Artist , but he is and always will be the No. 1 Singer of All Time. Elvis is The King !
September 9th, 2010 at 5:46 am
Elvis? At Number One!? HA! He barely wrote his own songs. He ripped off and watered down emotional black music and made it okay for lame ass white people (btw, I’m white) to listen to. Chuck Berry is the real king of Rock n’ Roll. If it were up to me, he’d be a true contender along with the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones and Michael Jackson.
September 9th, 2010 at 9:52 am
bob dylan would kick elvis’ ass
September 9th, 2010 at 10:10 am
Brian Quinn
That’s not true at all! Without some of those other artists Elvis wouldn’t be who he is. He copied a bunch of people’s songs and claimed them as his own and that made him a star. Your point is completely incorrect.
September 9th, 2010 at 1:12 pm
Where the HELL are the Temptations, the Four Tops, or Diana Ross?!?!?!??!?!?!?!? Did they frickin forget that Motown exists?!!??!?!?!??!?!?!??!
September 9th, 2010 at 7:27 pm
Elvis Presley should be on top. Why?? Because he became famous by coping black music and never gave them props. Please
September 10th, 2010 at 10:33 am
Unbelievable that the Eagles didn’t make the list. How can Sade, Alicia Keys, and Green Day be in front of the Eagles. I agree with Jeff wondering where the hell is Motown. If Mccartney and Lennon make the list independently then where the hell is Clapton. Cream is 1% of his catalogue.
September 10th, 2010 at 10:34 am
I also like Nirvana a lot, but they always get overrated on lists just because Cobain died. Prince is talented to but #7 is WAY too high. How could he be in front of Stevie Wonder?
September 10th, 2010 at 10:47 am
This was the worst musical list EVER formed. The term “artist” can be taken differently by many without proper explanation. Singer, songwriter, performer, voice, OR all of the above? I’m in my 30’s and I’m seriously disrespected by the fact that Sinatra wasn’t even in the top 5. We’re talking about someone who was relevant for MOST of the 1900’s (late 1930’s til 90’s). ARE YOU SERIOUS VH1?
September 10th, 2010 at 9:52 pm
Elvis Pressley, in my opinion, is a lot of hype and he’s overated. He got his claim to fame by copying Jackie Wilson, from the way he wore his hair, his singing style and can’t leave out the way he danced. Jackie Wilson came before Elvis did. A lot of people are not aware of that. Sorry to put a damper on your day!!!
September 10th, 2010 at 10:21 pm
MICHAEL JACKSON IS #1 IN MUSIC HISTORY HE HAD THE MOST TALENT AND HAVES THE BIGGEST SELLING ALBUM OF ALL TIME.
September 11th, 2010 at 1:32 am
This countdown is the worst countdown EVER!!!! Greatest artist of ALL TIME. Where are the classical greats: Motzart, Beethovan, the country greats: Dolly, Kenny Rogers, the huge acts from the 70s: Osmonds, Barry Manilow, Carpenters (yes, I said it). The Bee Gees are way too low on the list. Where are the Eagles, Chicago? This list should be renamed the top 100 artists that 200 artists got to vote on. What a crock!!!

EVERYONE KNOW MICHAEL JACKSON DESERVES TO BE NO.1 ‘STOP LYING TO YOUR SELF!

Where is Dave Matthews Band?????
September 12th, 2010 at 2:21 am
Quit your whining. They made it clear that the list came from votes of people currently in the industry. Multiple times they said that they’d done it before and that the results this time are much different than they were in 1998. All of these “Top 100″ lists are always going to be opinions and it’s likely that they won’t be the same as yours. Deal with it.
September 12th, 2010 at 10:07 am
Mariah Carey was in the ninetys? She is the best selling female artist of all time. and where was janet jackson and celine dion?
September 12th, 2010 at 12:03 pm
They picked the right artist for the #1 spot. They influenced everyone including Elvis!
September 12th, 2010 at 1:09 pm
Michael Jackson is the number 1 artist without question. He has the biggest selling album of all time, and his music reached more countries than the Beatles did.He made the music video an art form, and his is the most diverse in history. That’s something the Beatles or Bob Dylan were able to do. MJ should be number 1 period.
September 12th, 2010 at 10:38 pm
No, I’m sorry, I like MJ, but he IS NOT THE GREATEST ARTIST, STOP SAYING THAT. Yes, he did have the #1 best selling album, but that doesn’t mean he’s influenced the most artists. The Beatles easily did that. Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, James Brown, Black Sabbath, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and Bob Marley would be right behind them, not necessarily in that order. Then MJ would be behind them. MJ is still a possible top 10, but #2 is way too high. Also, Prince is way too high too, as is Nirvana. I love Nirvana, but #14 on a greatest of all time list is just too much. Maybe I’d put them in the twenties though.
September 13th, 2010 at 4:44 am
AC/DC… Need I say more?
September 13th, 2010 at 9:26 am
Michael Jackson should have been number 1. For goodness sakes, he has the biggest selling album of ALL TIME…..that is the foundation of artistry…ALBUMS…and Michael did it best. Let’s not even start on how many times he is in the Guinness Book of World Records for his other musical accomplishments. MICHAEL JACKSON IS THE QUINTESSENTIAL ARTIST OF ALL TIME…..The Beatles aren’t even on the same level. Matter of fact, they should have given MJ the #1 and #2 spots…..the rest can start at #3!
September 13th, 2010 at 10:47 am
I’m going to keep on saying that because it’s the truth. Michael Jackson had a much more transendent legacy than the Beatles or Elvis. If you go in to the suburbs or ghettos or countries like China, South America, or Africa you will find Michael Jackson fans of every race or creed. It’s as true with the Beatles or Elvis. He cracked the ceiling and changed the game. He brought people together the way those artists never did. Without Michael Jackson the would be no public figures today like Oprah or Barack Obama. His influence goes far beyond music. That’s why he is the number one artist. I think you forgot that fact.
September 13th, 2010 at 7:34 pm
You forget that without Chuck Berry, James Brown, or even the Beatles MJ would probably either sound a lot different or would never have started in the first place. The Beatles have in fact sold more records than MJ. No, their best selling sold less than MJ’s best selling, but total, they are the only artist to ever have over 1 billion records sold. Oprah and Obama? You’re kidding right? Oprah got big off her own merits and appeal to an all female audience. Obama became president because he was in the right place at the right time and the corporate powers of this country needed a politician to fool and appease minorites (didn’t work, mind you, I have many black friends who hate Obama). But that’s neither here nor there. Actually, where did you get MJ helping Oprah and Obama? I’m curious. There were other important black figures before Jackson, el stupido. Muhammed Ali, Bill Cosby, James Brown, and Richard Pryor were all spearheading the goal to give blacks the ability to achieve mainstream success long before MJ. And let’s not forget MLK Jr. or Rosa Parks. I’d say those two have had enough influence to completely dwarf everyone else combined, including MJ. Sorry, as I said, I like MJ, his 80’s stuff was cool, but he’s not the greatest artist of all time. Not now, not ever. Thank you.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:32 am
Phish, i understand the dead, but a whole population of people follow these guys around, but these guys are not the greatful Dead and anyone who sells out MSG three days in a row for fifteen years deserves this list…this list isn’t greatest artists of all time with a number one hit.
September 14th, 2010 at 12:33 am
Plus outside of Chuck Berry nobody on this list, including Jerry can lay down a guitar riff like trey.
September 14th, 2010 at 3:07 am
Justin Timberlake is on this list and Janet Jackson isn’t?? What kind of hack list was this really? Next time they should ask musicians over 15 years old.
September 14th, 2010 at 4:37 am
Michael Jackson is the greatest ever without question!
Greatest singer, dancer, songwriter/composer and live performer! All in one!
MJ is the KING!
September 14th, 2010 at 6:34 am
Adam MJ had bigger audiences than Richard Pryor, James Brown,Bill Cosby, Sammy Davis JR, and yes your pressious Beatles and Chuck Berry. When Thriller came out and Michael started have his success his quote in “TIME” Magazine was ” This has never happend to a black performer. Meaning he broke the ceiling unlike any other performer or public figuer before. Oprah has gone on record saying that Michael opened doors for many people including myself. Tariji P. Henson and Al Sharpton has said Michael Jackson laid the path for Barrack Obama because his popularity made people more open to people of color and laid the groundwork for Obama to become elected. So before you call me stupid go back and research before you declare yourself so high and mighty.
September 14th, 2010 at 10:06 am
Coldplay. Justin Timberlake, Outkast, Beyonce-(can’t even write music) and A.Keys. Really!??! Way to early. But no Eric Clapton, Rod Steward, and The Eagles, Sinatra. I wonder what was the age group of artist they questioned. 13-25. But I’m very glad to see MJ, Sade, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones.
September 14th, 2010 at 8:17 pm
I can’t believe you’re quoting Al Sharpton. That racist f*** shouldn’t be referenced for anything relevant, except maybe to portray him as the bigoted fraud he is. But anyway, yes, MJ was huge, yes Thriller sold more albums than any other. Yes, black performers became MORE mainstream, but they were already fairly mainstream thanks to the likes of those I mentioned previously. I don’t buy the idea that Obama stuggled to get elected. Bullshit. I mean, I voted for him because I hated Bush, as did many others (who subsequently got screwed). As I said, Al Sharpton is full of shit. Obama was elected because his Wall Street and Madison Avenue masters gave him billions of dollars for campaigning, and he with the most money gathers the most votes (not even McCain had that much). The Beatles broke the door down for musical independence and creativity like no other band. And Chuck Berry created rock n’ roll as we know it. Michael Jackson is arguably the greatest entertainer of all time, but he did not break down doors like artists before him did. He also owes a lot to them, as without them, he may not have became an entertainer. I’m sorry, you’re not stupid, you’re just misinformed and biased.
September 15th, 2010 at 4:43 am
Your all full of manure. Just read the facts if you can read at all.
ELVIS THE KING OF ROCK & ROLL..
It is estimated that Elvis has sold over one billion records worldwide, more than anyone else in the history of the record business. It is estimated that 60% of these sales have been in the United States and 40% in other countries.
In August 1992, BMG/RCA Records and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) posthumously awarded to Elvis 110 gold, platinum and multi-platinum albums and singles, the largest presentation of gold and platinum record awards in history.
RCA also presented a 9-foot glass sculpture proclaiming Elvis the greatest recording artist of all time.
As of January 2004, Elvis has 147 different albums and singles certified gold, platinum or multi-platinum by the RIAA. By far, Elvis has more RIAA certifications than any other artist or group.
Read it and weep losers, ELVIS IS THE KING! AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN PUT ON TOP #1 !
September 15th, 2010 at 12:16 pm
how can JAY Z AND BIGGIE TOP TUPAC…MAYBE THAT WAS CLSOE..BUT HOW THE HELL ON EARTH JUSTIN MADE IT AND NOT USHER…..HOW CAN EMINEM MADE IT AND NAS IS NOT
September 15th, 2010 at 10:47 pm
My husband and I disagreed about the #1 spot also. I leaning toward MJ and he was 100% The Beatles. My argument was that MJ has been doing this since he was around 5 years old, he sings AND he dances. But my husband’s argument back was that The Beatles wrote all of their music and being able to write incredible music is more of an art than singing and dancing to it. After that I then started to lean toward The Beatles. What do you think?
September 16th, 2010 at 1:07 am
I’m wondering who some could be in front of other great artists.
Bob Dylan kicking elvis’ ass comment was funny. I actually went to see Bob and John Mellencamp. Cyndi Lauper in the same week. I wonder if Duran Duran made it. I was like Ha! Paul beat MJ heh. say say say what you want….
September 16th, 2010 at 1:39 am
In all honesty, this list should have been called The Greatest Artists since 1950. I say that because they missed Sinatra and the like, but also incredibly important classical musicians like Bach and Beethoven, as well as a lot of great jazz artists like Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, etc. and Robert Johnson, who many, including Eric Clapton, will say was THE architect of rock n’ roll. Since 1950, though, the Beatles are the greatest artist by far, with Chuck Berry at #2.
September 16th, 2010 at 1:42 am
I just looked at the list. Where the hell is Duran Duran?? Even Bob Dylan said they made the best ramake of his song. Mariah Carey seriously? Peter Gabriel not top 10?? Phil collins? What freakin artists chose these artists? arghhhh
September 16th, 2010 at 1:43 am
oh crap forgot to mention John Mellencamp. Mellencamp wow!
September 19th, 2010 at 12:05 am
Quit lying to yourselves… Elvis is, was, and always will be the KING…His stage presence is unmatched still today.I think I even heard a potato chip that looked like him sold on ebay, not to mention graceland is a national exibit, not somewhere that a black man turned white woman molested kids
September 19th, 2010 at 1:19 am
First Elvis ripped off a lot of the musical stylings from the black artists of his era. And Stage Presence Unmatched “Alan you are the one who is lying to yourself.” Michael Jackson had more stage presence is his middle finger than Elvis had is his entire body. His dance style has been emulated by all of the big artists today, and you forget he was aquitted of those charges because they never found anything, and Jordan Chanlder’s father was trying to get money out of MJ to finance a movie project. When MJ said no he blackmaled him. There is even a tape when he is describing how he was going to blackmale MJ. But we just magically forgot about all of that. Get your fact straight.
September 19th, 2010 at 1:46 am
Another thing Adam you said I was misinformed. Well my response is this. I know MJ was a beatles fan and he idolized James Brown and Jackie Wilson. But once again you forget his audience reached farther than any of those artists including Chuck Berry. When MJ passed away, NPR had a noted musical historian come on an talk about Michael Jackson’s legacy compared to people like Elvis, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. He said and I quote.” Elvis and The Beatles and the Stones audience only went as far as western Europe, Michael Jacskon’s went as far as Asia The Middle East, Africa and other places that had never been reached before.” He was truely the first World Icon is what the guy said. It’s about how far and how many people you reach, and who you influence. Michael Jackson’s audience was bigger than Chuck Berry’s, The Beatles, Elvis, Sam Cooke as wells as others you have mentioned. Plus there would be no MTV if it wasn’t for Michael Jackson. When I say he laid the path for Obama it is because, as the musical historian noted on NPR,he was the first world icon who was a man of color. Art Impacts Life LL.Cool J said once. Obama would not have raised than money if people did not believe in him and follow him. When Obama campaigned the audience he gained around the country as well as the world was similar to MJ’s. MJ paved the was for him to do that. So go ahead and talk about corperate interest, and go head and talk about the Beatles and Chuck Berry all you want. What I have told about Michael Jackson is fact not fiction. So once again before you say I’m miss informed. Go check your facts so you can become better informed.
September 19th, 2010 at 2:08 am
By the way guys here was another band who better than Beatles. I think the band was called Queen.
September 19th, 2010 at 4:44 am
MJ was only the first global icon because oppressive communist dictatorships, like the ones in China and the USSR, did not allow bands like the Beatles or Elvis or Berry or James Brown, etc. to gain an audience in the East while they were making music. MJ hit not too long before the collapse of the Soviet Union. Also keep in mind that the media wasn’t as consolidated back in the 60’s and 70’s as it is/was when MJ was getting huge, so a large amount of broadcasters, especially in foreign nations (whose media, again, was not owned bu American companies at the time) did not play American music. It wasn’t until media became consolidated in the late 80’s that American artists reached a global audience, and that was well past the Beatles or Elvis. So overall, I’d say MJ’s reach was partly due to his own merits and partly due to his sponsors and promoters. If it weren’t for the latter, it’s obvious that MJ would still be huge in America, and would have had success in other Western nations, much like the Beatles, but not much beyond that. Therefore, he is not the greatest artist of all time. Btw, I still don’t think MJ has anything to do with Obama.
September 19th, 2010 at 5:54 am
Oh so now it’s the promoters and Communistic dictatorships. That is a weak arguement. When MJ was little he went over to Europe, when Communism was at it’s height, with his brothers they played his music and they sold out areana’s. Plus the fact when MJ hit it I think Communism was still around,we were still fighting the cold war, and they still played his music. He did a show in East Berlin, and there was famous ocurrence. And I believe Communism was still there at the time. Also the reason why he paved the way for Obama was the fact that he was a global icon and man of color, and a generation grew up listening to his music and watching him on TV. You keep missing that fact. It’s a very important fact. Plus he had to fight with the media when he first tried to get his videos played, and he won. So the media arguement is weak. You can keep talking about his promoters you can talk about the media establishment the facts are the facts. He reach more people than Beatles and Chuck Berry. He had a more diverse audience the Beatles and Chuck Berry. He re-wrote the rules of the game. Plus I will say it before and will say again if you go to the ghettos or suburbs you will find just as many MJ fans. The Beatles never did that. Go back and check your facts again. Plus Queen was a better band than Beatles ever were.
September 19th, 2010 at 7:02 am
Elvis was just good looking who shook his butt and legs. White people made him King of Rock, because they wanted a white guy to represent. I never liked his songs.
Michael now he is a true artist regardeless of his drama in life.
September 19th, 2010 at 11:30 am
How is it a weak argument? Keep in mind the 80’s were a much different political climate than the 60’s. Civil Rights had long since passed and Gorbachev was implementing perosroika in the USSR. Yes the Cold War was still technically going on, but it was more or less rhetoric at that point to compliment the surge of nationalism that was happening in America under the Reagan administration. Gorbachev was in fact a much more lenient and tolerant leader than, say, Khrushchev (the Russian dictator at the height of the Beatles’ career). A generation did grow up with MJ, in fact 2 generations did, but the same can be said of Berry and Brown. No, those two didn’t sell nearly as many records as MJ, but they defined their respective eras just as much as he did. And you forget that the generations who grew up with MJ were also fed lies and misinformation about him on a massive scale, so millions of those people saw him as a raging pedophile and neurotic individual. It wasn’t until his death that that bullshit was exposed for what it was and forgotten, and that happened after Obama’s election. Besides, MJ was not the first of a minority to achieve global acknowledgment and respect. Gandhi, MLK, and Muhammad Ali all preceded him. If you’re going to stick by your argument, I’d put them in front of MJ as helping Ofailure to win his election.
Oh yeah, I heard about MTV denying black artists on their channel. Ironic, MJ inadvertently made that channel huge. Still, MTV would’ve broke regardless, it just would’ve taken longer, similar to how grunge would have gotten big even without Nirvana, but it probably wouldn’t have happened for another few years.
September 20th, 2010 at 9:26 pm
From 2000-2009 who had the biggest selling album. The Beatles, case close.
September 24th, 2010 at 10:27 pm
Was anyone else annoyed that Sheryl Crow was on commenting on every f^cking artist? Like she’s an authority???? These list are a joke anyway, it’s all opinion. Led Zeppelin before The Who?????????????
September 25th, 2010 at 2:56 am
do you guy’s even know your music history or do you just think you do. by saying elvis stole black music is like saying tiger stole the white mans sport just total cry baby bs
September 25th, 2010 at 2:57 am
he broke boundries and enabled tons of black musicians to gain notoriety. he blended counrty honky tonk hillbilly gospel rythem and blues to create his own style of rock n roll.he was a song smith
September 25th, 2010 at 3:01 am
where was Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Haley, Ricky Nelson,Hank Wiliiams, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Frank FN SINATRA wow justin timberlake made the list and these artists didn’t
September 25th, 2010 at 12:38 pm
It was a list created by asking “artists” in the industry who “their” favorite top 5 were. There did not seem to be any set criteria such as:
Did their favorite artist..
1. Sing (I know, a no-brainer),
2. Write their own songs,
3. Play an instrument or multiple instruments,
4. Have Charisma,
5. Could they dance, or choreograph their own dancing,
6. Quality of live performances?
I want to add that I loved MJ, Prince, Aerosmith, Elton John, Madonna…and many others. It would be impossible to make a list that would satisfy everyone because we all have different tastes.
September 27th, 2010 at 6:50 am
What a load of crap with all this “Michael Jackson should be number 1.” In the last list done a few years ago he was 40th which is about right. During the 70’s he sang in a bubble gum pop group who had their music written for them. Aside from his two huge albums in the 80’s which were nothing more than pop fluff and good dance music he became nothing more than a huge hype machine aided by MTV. His sound never changed and through the 90’s he was still trying to push the same sound from 10 years earlier. He did have a huge fan base which explains the continued adoration but as an artist and real songwriter his influence is weak. Dying is the reason he jumped 39 spots. The real king of pop is Paul McCartney who’s range of work from the early 60’s on has literally changed the face of music and who along with John Lennon re-wrote the history of music. Okay MJ fans start your personal attacks.
September 29th, 2010 at 12:13 am
fair list

September 29th, 2010 at 6:32 am
No Buddy Holly, or Smokey Robinson?
September 30th, 2010 at 12:15 am
Buddy Holly and Smokey should both be in the top 20 they didn’t even make the list.
October 10th, 2010 at 7:44 am
A lot of people on here think their opinion is an authority on music when its not or their simple dislike for another artist is setting their opinions to equal facts. First The Beatles are a great band but that doesn’t change the fact that in the beginning they were more main stream pop than sending a real message. That came later in their career. Second MJ did not play instruments but that’s because he WAS the instrument. Go check out his demos and tell me he’s not a musician. He used himself to create his own music he was a living boombox. And he did write the majority of his songs esp his hits so idk where the idea came from that he didn’t. Third saying his success in Europe is b/c they didn’t allow other music eg the beatles etc., is ignorant b/c that is an opinion that cannot be backed up with facts. So plz state that as an opinion not a fact since there is no way of knowing. And I agree Queens is an amazing band.
October 11th, 2010 at 12:09 am
As you said, nobody here is an authority on music, and that includes you too. I will say one thing though. MJ never matured as an artist. Maybe he did write a lot of his songs, but he never progressed and experimented like most revered artists (i.e. Lennon, Cobain, Morrison, etc.) have. This is why his popularity waned in the 90’s and 00’s, and was only brought back with his death. I’m sorry, but Black and White was a huge disappointment, and I can’t name any song thereafter that I like. And you could ask anyone what their favorite songs are by him and a I can guarantee you that 99% of them will be one from either Thriller or Bad. Most of the other 1% will be his 70’s stuff. He was a phenomenal entertainer, arguably the best there ever was, but as an artist? He was very, very average.

His popularity waned? In what sense b/c the media wouldn’t cover him doesn’t mean it waned at all. Considering his last album Invincible was not promoted at all by Sony yet went to number 1 when it was release including the U.S and sold an estimated 15 million copies says a lot about his popularity. That is more than any modern artist today and let’s not forget that this is in the age of illegal downloads. His albums continue to sell just like The Beatles today. His sound covers everything from pop to rock maybe you should listen to his music more. Just b/c the majority name Thriller doesn’t mean he didn’t cover other types of music. Personally my favorite album of his is not Thriller. As an artist he is average? You have obviously not seen him grow from the 5 year boy to the artist he became. You have never taken the time to break down his music your opinion is base on the popular belief that all he did was dance. Yet you have never consider how much work goes into dancing which is an art. Just because it doesn’t fit your defintion doesn’t make it any less artistic. So maybe to you its just dancing and singing but to MJ it was hours of work to be able to sing and dance on stage. It was rehearsing for hours to get one step right maybe it was his fault for making it look so easy. Legends such as Frank Sinatra, James Brown, Motown artists have shown him respect for a reason. He has influence a whole generation of artists. A simple average entertainer could not do that. I think Lennon and the rest are respectable artists I just wish that other ppl would show MJ the same respect. I think we can at least agree that these artists including MJ are much better than the ones out today.

I do show respect to the guy’s ability to entertain. He was a natural entertainer, and as I said I cannot think of one person who tops him in that area. The only person who comes close to MJ as an entertainer is James Brown himself. That is certainly respectable. That being said, I still stick to my guns that he was an average to maybe slightly above average artist.

What do some of you idiots mean Sade should not be on this list. You should listen to an artist first before talking about them. Sade is amazing

TO LOSERS : Michael A.F Geheb, Adam, Aria, Mike C :
JUST READ YOUR MUSIC HISTORY BOOKS PLEASE. !!!! DON’T BE MAKING STUPID COMMENTS YOU DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MUSIC!
It is estimated that Elvis has sold over one billion records worldwide, more than anyone else in the history of the record business.(THAT INCLUDES THE BEATLES AND MJ,AND ALL THE REST!) It is estimated that 60% of these sales have been in the United States and 40% in other countries.

So according to the comments the winner is Elvis just because he’s been dead the longest? lol. MJ and The Beatles legit artists, elvis didn’t even write his own songs.
November 6th, 2010 at 5:17 am
HAIL TO THE KING
even the beatles agree that ELVIS rules supreme
November 6th, 2010 at 6:00 am
Elvis could not sing or dance like Michael Jackson. Elvis could have never changed the musical landscape the way MJ did.The Jackson estate is on pace to blow away the profits that took Elvis’s estate over 33 years to make. MJ is the real king. That’s why they called him the King of Pop, and last time I checked Rock is a popular for of music.
November 6th, 2010 at 6:21 am
WOW ELVIS changed the world long before mj. i give mj credit but cmon to say elvis couldnt sing like him is nuts mj couldnt sing like elvis. get real man elvis got the ball rolling long before the jackson 5 or mj did a thing. in music history elvis presley is considered the big bang not just for music but the world. stop being biast and get educated
November 6th, 2010 at 6:24 am
mj’s best music as a solo artist was in a single decade. he didnt have the same hit power. elvis had 3 decades of chart toppers. im done wasting my time trying to teach morons
November 6th, 2010 at 10:30 am
Guys give me a break. Mj did more in 2 decades as a solo artist than Elvis ever did. Plus the fact, and I’ve mentioned this in reference to the Beatles, MJ reached more people in more countries than Elvis ever did. Let’s not mention than MJ’s audience was much diverse than Elvis. MJ also transcended Elvis never did that. Meaning MJ was just as popular in the ghettos as well as the suburbs. Elvis never achieved that. So let’s talk about who was the bigger star. It’s all about transcendency moron.
November 8th, 2010 at 1:43 am
I dont give a fish for the artists like beatles, rolling stones , elvis presley, etc . They r greats I know bt I never listnd to them , and i’l never listen 2 dem now. I only care abt artists of today.
1st of all, for god sake, EMINEM at no. 79 . A guy who’s record sales are pushing a billion mark worldwide, who becomes no. 1 on billboard the day he drops his album. Who has got the most fiercest die hard fans in d world , a guy who influenced a whole generation. He deserves to b at least in d top 40.
2nd J,.T. in d 60’s. Wtf, u all r insane . He shud be in d nineties or out of this list
Plz, Mariah carey shud be higher.
Jay z is too overated just like his wifey beyonce.
and where the hell are these ppl:-
Britney spears,
Usher,
Celine dion,
Linkin park (maybe)
I wanna know why artists of dis generation cant make d cut in these lists. All d so called ‘legends’ are legends because they startd smthing new bt dat doesnt mean dey r d best.
Do u know that 1 million copies sold today is equal to almost 10 millions copies sold 25 or 30 yrs ago. We shud always cherish the past bt shud keep in mind the present n the future…peace.
November 9th, 2010 at 9:34 am
Vik4u - Thats de prob man. There is NO current artists of today WORTH listening to!
The ones you’ve mentioned, like eminem, Jay Z shouldn’t even be mentioned for the top 100. They aren’t very good.
Others Like Celene Dion, Mariah Carey should be higher on the list.
Most are 1, 2 hit wonders then fizzle out, like britney spears.
None hold a candle to yesteryears top stars, So get some music education, and listen to other groups that have done well before.
AND START GIVING A FISH MON.
November 20th, 2010 at 4:08 am
Vh1 and the stupid ass so called judges have their heads so far up their bums that lighting an candle up there would still leave it black as their pitiful souls!

ELVIS PRESLEY IS # 1 FOREVER!
Record Sales
It is estimated that Elvis Presley has sold over one billion recordS worldwide, more than anyone in record industry history. In America alone, Elvis has had 150 different albums and singles that have been certified gold, platinum or multi-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), with more certifications expected as research into his past record sales continues and as current sales go on. Research is also underway to document his record sales achievements in other countries. It is estimated that 40% of Elvis’ total record sales have been outside the United States.
International Acclaim
Elvis Presley’s trophy room at Graceland is filled with gold and platinum records and awards of all kinds from around the world. Some of the countries represented are: Norway, Yugoslavia, Japan, Australia, South Africa, England, Sweden, Germany, France, Canada, Belgium, and The Netherlands.
It is interesting to note that, except for a handful of movie soundtrack songs, Elvis did not record in other languages, and, except for five shows in three Canadian cities in 1957, he did not perform in concert outside the United States. Still, his recordings and films enjoyed, and continue to enjoy, popularity all over the globe, and he is known throughout the world by his first name.
Record Chart Statistics
Elvis has had no less than 149 songs to appear on Billboard’s Hot 100 Pop Chart in America. Of these, 114 were in the top forty, 40 were in the top ten, and 18 went to number one. His number one singles spent a total of 80 weeks at number one. He has also had over 90 charted albums with ten of them reaching number one. These figures are only for the pop charts and only in America. He was also a leading artist in the American country, R&B, and gospel fields, and his chart success in other countries was substantial.
Historic Television Guest Appearances
In 1956, Elvis made his network television debut with the first of his six appearances on “Stage Show,” a weekly variety program hosted by Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. He followed these with two appearances on “The Milton Berle Show,” the second of which included a performance of “Hound Dog” that was so provocative (for that time, anyway) that it caused a national scandal. Elvis next appeared on “The Steve Allen Show,” with Allen mocking the sensation of the Berle appearance by having Elvis dress in a tuxedo, eliminate his usual physical gyrations, and sing “Hound Dog” to a Basset Hound. Ed Sullivan had once said he would never have the controversial singer on his top-rated show, but that was before the week that Elvis’ appearance on “Steve Allen” had surpassed Sullivan’s ratings. Sullivan paid Elvis $50,000 to make three appearances on his show, which was, at the time, more money than any performer had ever been paid to appear on a network variety program. When Elvis made his third Sullivan appearance in January of 1957, Ed Sullivan surprised Elvis by telling him on camera that his show had never had a better experience with a name act, and said “I wanted to say to Elvis and the country that this is a real decent, fine boy.” It was on this very same Sullivan appearance that Elvis was shown on camera from the waist up only, one of early television history’s most memorable moments. Elvis’ next network television appearance was in 1960, when Frank Sinatra gave his variety show a “Welcome Home, Elvis” theme to herald Elvis’ return from the Army. Elvis was paid $125,000 to appear - again, making history.
The Silver Screen
Elvis in the moviesElvis starred in 31 feature films as an actor and two theatrically released concert documentary films, all of which enjoyed financial success. For a number of years he was one of Hollywood’s top box office draws and one of its highest-paid actors. His two most critically acclaimed films, “Jailhouse Rock” (1957) and “King Creole” (1958), have become classics of their era. His movies and concert films enjoy a healthy life today in television syndication and home video sales and rentals. Some of his top-selling music came from his movies. Eleven of his movie soundtrack albums went to the top 10, and of those, four went to number one. The soundtrack for “G.I. Blues” (1960) was number one on the Billboard Top 100 album chart for 10 weeks and remained on the chart for 111 weeks. The album from “Blue Hawaii” was number one for 20 weeks and was on the chart for 79 weeks.
Television Specials
Elvis Presley’s three network television specials - “Elvis” (1968), “Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii, via Satellite” (1973), and “Elvis in Concert” (1977) - stand among the most highly rated specials of their time. His 1968 special, “Elvis,” is one of the most critically acclaimed music specials of all time. His 1973 special, “Elvis - Aloha from Hawaii, via Satellite,” was seen in 40 countries by 1 billion to 1.5 billion people and made television history. It was seen on television in more American homes than man’s first walk on the moon.
The Concert Stage
When Elvis returned to the live stage after the success of his 1968 television special and the wrap-up of his Hollywood movie contract obligations, he opened at the International Hotel in Las Vegas in the summer of 1969 for a four-week, 57-show engagement that broke all existing Las Vegas attendance records. He returned to the International a few months later in early 1970, during the slow winter season in Vegas, and broke his own attendance record. Right after that came a record-breaking six-show engagement at the Astrodome in Houston, where Elvis played to a total of 207,494 people. Elvis took his elaborate live show on the road in the latter part of 1970 for his first concert tour since 1957. Throughout the 1970’s, Elvis toured America where he broke box office records, while continuing to play an engagement or two per year in Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe. Among the outstanding highlights of this period was in 1972, when Elvis performed four sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden. During his “concert years” from 1969 to 1977, Elvis gave nearly 1,100 concert performances.
Grammy Awards
Elvis received 14 Grammy nominations from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS). His three wins were for gospel recordings - the album “How Great Thou Art” (1967), the album “He Touched Me” (1972) and his live Memphis concert recording of the song “How Great Thou Art” (1974). In 1971, NARAS also recognized him with their Lifetime Achievement Award (known then as the Bing Crosby Award in honor of its first recipient). Elvis was 36 years old at the time.
Six of Elvis’ recordings, all of them his original studio masters, have been inducted into the NARAS Hall of Fame: “Hound Dog” (1956 recording, inducted 1988); “Heartbreak Hotel” (1956 recording, inducted 1995); “That’s All Right” (1954 recording, inducted 1998); “Suspicious Minds” (1969 recording, inducted 1999); “Don’t Be Cruel” (1956 recording, inducted 2002); and “Are You Lonesome Tonight” (1960 recording, inducted 2007). The Recording Academy’s national trustees established the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 1973 to honor recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance that are at least 25 years old. Many inductees are recordings that were created and released before the 1958 inception of NARAS and the Grammy Awards.
Elvis Ten Outstanding Young Men
One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation
The United States Junior Chamber of Commerce (the Jaycees) named Elvis One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation for 1970 in a ceremony on January 16, 1971, one of Elvis’ proudest moments. This award has been given since 1938 and has honored men of achievement in all areas of endeavor - sports, government, science, medicine, entertainment, etc. It recognizes outstanding personal achievement and the exemplification of the opportunities available in the free enterprise system, along with patriotism, humanitarianism, and community service. (In the 1980’s, eligibility was opened to women as well as men, and the award has since been presented to the year’s Ten Outstanding Young Americans.)
Charitable Endeavors
Elvis Presley was famous for giving away Cadillacs, cash and jewelry, often on the spur of the moment. But, the true depth and breadth of his generosity and community involvement is not so widely known. In 1961, Elvis gave a benefit concert at Bloch Arena in Hawaii that raised over $65,000 toward the building of the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. The resulting publicity gave new life to the fund-raising effort, which had, by then, lost its momentum. The memorial opened a year later. Audience tickets for his 1973 “Aloha from Hawaii” television special and its pre-broadcast rehearsal show carried no price, as each audience member was asked to pay whatever he or she could. The performances and concert merchandise sales were a benefit raising $75,000 for the Kui Lee Cancer Fund in Hawaii. Each year, for many years, Elvis gave $1,000 or more to each of 50 Memphis-area charities, but also continually made many other charitable donations in Memphis and around the country.
Most of Elvis’ philanthropic endeavors received no publicity at all. Throughout his adult life, for friends, for family, and for total strangers, he quietly paid hospital bills, bought homes, supported families, paid off debts, and much more.
Elvis’ legacy of generosity continues through the work of the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation, which is the philanthropic branch of Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. and the creator of the Elvis Presley Endowed Scholarship Fund at the University of Memphis. The tradition of giving also continues through the work of the Elvis fan clubs worldwide, most of which are heavily involved in charitable endeavors in Elvis’ memory.
Graceland Mansion
Graceland, Elvis Presley’s home and refuge for 20 years, is one of the most visited homes in America today, now attracting over 600,000 visitors annually. In 1991, Graceland Mansion was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2006, Graceland was designated a National Historic Landmark. Find out more about visiting Graceland.
The Elvis Stamp
In 1992, the U.S. Postal Service announced that Elvis’ imageElvis Stamp would be used for a commemorative postage stamp. The Postal Service narrowed the artwork choices down to two images - one of Elvis in the 1950’s as a sizzling young rocker, and one of him as a concert superstar in his 1973 “Aloha from Hawaii” special. In an unprecedented move, the USPS put the decision to the American people and distributed ballots coast to coast. Over 1.2 million votes were cast and the image of the young rocker won. The stamp was released on January 8, 1993, with extravagant first day of issue ceremonies at Graceland. The Elvis stamp is the most widely publicized stamp issue in the history of the U.S. Postal Service and it is the top selling commemorative postage stamp of all time. The USPS printed 500 million of them, three times the usual print run for a commemorative stamp. Several countries outside the U.S. also have issued Elvis stamps over the years.
Special Posthumous Honors
The 1984, W.C. Handy Award from the Blues Foundation in Memphis recognized Elvis for “keeping the blues alive in his music - rock ‘n’ roll.” The Academy of Country Music’s first Golden Hat Award presented in 1984 recognized Elvis’ influence on country music. In 1986, Elvis was among the first group of inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1987, Elvis was honored with the first posthumous presentation of the Award of Merit by the American Music Awards. In 1998, Elvis received the Country Music Association’s highest honor, induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 2001, Elvis was inducted into the Gospel Music Association’s Gospel Music Hall of Fame. With that honor, Elvis is the only person, so far, to become a member of all three of these halls of fame - Rock and Roll, Country and Gospel.
A New Concert Career
On August 16, 1997, Elvis, via video, starred in an extravagant concert production entitled Elvis in Concert ‘97 at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis, Tennessee, accompanied live on stage by over 30 of his former bandmates and the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. The show played before a capacity crowd of fans who had come to Memphis from around the world to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Elvis’ death. Elvis broke the MidSouth Coliseum’s all-time record dollar figure for box office sales. This concert was the prototype for the 1998/99 touring production Elvis - The Concert. By being the first performer ever to headline a live concert tour while no longer living, Elvis made history again. The March 1998 tour included a three-show smash engagement at Radio City Music Hall in New York. The August 1998 tour included the excitement of Elvis’ “return” to the Las Vegas Hilton with an eight-show engagement. The January/ February 1999 European tour opened with a sell-out at London’s Wembley Arena and, in effect, marked Elvis’ first-ever concerts outside of North America. As of 2010, the show continues to tour worldwide.

LONG LIVE THE KING OF ROCK & ROLL… ELVIS PRESLEY… SECOND TO NONE!
November 28th, 2010 at 11:27 am
No I think you need to get educated. Elvis did not transcend. Michael Jackson did. The Jackson estate is estimated to blow Elvis’s estate out of the water. I think you are living too much in 50’s. Wake up. Without Michael Jackson there would be no MTV. Without Michael Jackson other artists and public like Prince or Barrack Obama ( YES BARRACK OBAMA Taraji P. Henson said this) would not have gained the notoriety they had. And things like the Hip-Hop would never have gotten as big as it did if Michael Jackon not transcended.Michael created the biggest selling record of all time, Bad and Dangerous the second and third biggest at the time. Michael Jackson also reached other countries Elvis never went too. Checked Elvis is second to one. The one’s name is Michael Jackson.
November 29th, 2010 at 12:10 am
Who cares about popularity and wealth. A good artist, those do not make. Hell, Justin Bieber and Lil’ Wayne are huge right now, and none of you can look me in the eye and tell me that they’re even average artists. Elvis was a great entertainer, but a failed artist. He never progressed artistically and remained solely an entertainer until he died in 1977. I could care less how much he’s worth. Chuck Berry is the real king of rock n’ roll. Michael Jackson was definitely both a better entertainer and artist than Elvis was. Michael was one of the best dancers of all time, and he wrote the vast majority of his songs. He also progressed a little bit. However, he was also only a slightly above average artist. The Beatles are the most well known great artists of recent history. They may not be as important historically as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Robert Jonhson, Duke Ellington, etc., but as far as music since 1950 is concerned, they are the most important artists. John Lennon alone was more vital to culture than both Elvis and MJ combined. He’s still a towering figure, even for people my age, 30 years after his death. Elvis certainly does not have that kind of presence over younger generations. MJ? I can’t say anything about him yet, as he only died a year ago. As of now though, he definitely has a strong presence over people my age as well. Whether he will turn out like Lennon rather than Presley? Only time will tell. Here’s how I’d rant them -
The Beatles > MJ >>> Elvis
Any questions?
March 7th, 2011 at 4:50 am
@Linda Says: Michael Jackson is No. 1. Michael Jackson did not JUST sing and dance he ALSO wrote most of his music and most of his hits including Billie Jean and Beat It. Michael Jackson is the FIRST black artist in history to win the Grammy for Best Rock Single. That year he won for best rock and best R&B single for RECORD breaking 8 Grammys that year. So, to recap, Michael started singing professionally at age 5, had his first FOUR number 1 hits by the time he was 11 - He’s also the first artist to ever do that - NOT Elvis or the Beatles. Michael wrote his music, played 4 instruments, produced his music, changed the way music was created and sung. He created sounds in music that had never been done/heard before him. He has the best selling album of ALL TIME - not Elvis or the Beatles. And Michael is beloved ALL OVER THE WORLD. Michael earned the #1 spot. So, please share this with your husband who obviously doesn’t know much about Michael Jackson. He’s also the most nominated artist of all time, including an OSCAR non for Ben when he was teenager. Michael became the YOUNGEST artist to ever perform at the Oscars when he sang Ben at the award show. Michael also holds numerous Guiness World Records. And dare is say, unlike Elvis and the Beatles, Michael Jackson was the one artist to bring the races together. EVERYONE Love Michael, black, white, Asian, Hispanic, Middle Eatern - We ALL LOVE MICHAEL. There has never been anyone like him EVER and there never will be. Michael is No. 1
March 7th, 2011 at 4:53 am
P.S. And I like the Beatles and Elvis, but the evidence proves that Michael Jackson is No. 1.
March 26th, 2011 at 6:20 am
Yeah, MJ was the first and only black artist to bring the little boys into his bedroom. So yes, he did bring more different and diverse fan base. He touched so many young virgin boys… on their privates! Yes he was the King of little boys!
March 29th, 2011 at 2:19 am
@ WRP
Oh well how original did it take you a whole day to come up with that? Comment when you have something real to say this is about music not anybody’s personal life (fyi he was found innocent) so hate on him all you want you will still be hearing his music long after you’re gone.
March 29th, 2011 at 5:19 am
Oh I hope not! Well its probably a lot better thatn the Shitles.. aka Beatles?
Oh and it didn’t take me about 2 seconds to come up with that… everybody knows he’s a perv. and his, wait for it… wait for it…HISTORY … get it numbskull? HAW HAW Get a life
March 29th, 2011 at 5:28 am
Michael Geheb : Your a music IDIOT. MJ AND all the rest of them took advantage of MTV and what it offered them. YANKOVIC’S JUST EAT IT WAS WAY MORE INVENTIVE AND HILARIOUS… Way better that MJ’s version by far. MJ for the most part, and latter part of his career was just a repeat performance, REPEAT moves, and crotch grabbing little boy who never grew up pervert of the 20th, and 21st century. He will never ever, be in ELVIS’S LEAGUE and NEVER EVER BE EVEN #2 LET ALONE #1. GROW UP LITTLE BOY AND LOOK, LEARN AND LISTEN… ELVIS IS SECOND TO NONE!
March 29th, 2011 at 5:50 am
Funny since Elvis dated Priscilla when she was 14 and that’s a fact now whose the pedophile? LOL. MJ gave permission to weird al to make a parody out of his songs. Weird Al asked MJ permission for every song before he would parody it if MJ said no which he did on one occasion Weird Al did not do the song. Funny that you call MJ a repeat performer that was not inventive in his later years when the same thing can be said about Elvis. MJ’s music inspired a generation despite his scandals while Elvis ex wife worked overtime to make a name for him since Elvis was never an inventive artist from the start he never wrote his own songs at least MJ wrote his songs and can really claim to have changed pop culture.
March 29th, 2011 at 5:50 am
Pina Says:
ALOT. BUT ITS ALL BULLSH**.
STUPID ASS. You are not educated or read any of these music blogs.
MJ wasn’t the only grammy winner, idiot. Elvis won a Grammy. ELVIS TOPPED MJ BY HAVING 10 #1 HITS IN A ROW… NOT EVEN the beatles could do that!
When Elvis had the around the world concert via Satillite in HAWAII, 1973 that touched the whole world and reached so many fans that no one ever has come close to that sellout concert maybe reaching billions that day!
So what about musical instruments?, all the top artists played an instrument. Elvis played the guitar, and played the piano… so whats your point?
about popularity ? you’ve got to be joking… Man there isn’t a place you can go ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD AND MENTION ELVIS and not have people know who you are talking about and smile, and raise their fist and say yeah he is the greatest! How many ELVIS impersonators are in Las Vegas alone… Hundreds if not thousands… How many MJ impersonators… ? what? none? That figures…They had ELVIS IMPERSONATORS.. GET THIS… THIS WILL BLOW YOUR MIND LOSER…
WHEN HE WAS STILL SINGING AND during ALL OF HIS CAREER MAN… IF THAT ISN’T THE GREATEST FLATTERY EVER, THEN THER NEVER WILL BE!
SO SHUT UP. You don’t know what your talking about.

March 29th, 2011 at 7:08 am
HJ are just initials moron MJ also sold out every show what’s your point? MJ a mediocre singer is laughable also learn to construct a proper sentence I feel like am arguing with a 10 year old. You also don’t need to use caps lock I can tell am pissing you off be careful you might give yourself a heart attack.
March 29th, 2011 at 7:16 am
I prefer caps.. But since it bothers you little boy or girl, I will use these. You seem to reference young boys ages just like the KIng Of Poop! ooh have I offended your Boy? Mj for years did nothing with his career … Wonder what he was up to or with? maybe a pajama party, but not with girls which I would have respected a little more, but with little innocent boys! What a perv. FAG!
March 29th, 2011 at 7:47 am
No dude you’re the one who keeps bringing up in fact you brought it up first it’s kinda disturbing to be honest. MJ did release an album in 2001 which sold millions and went to number 1 in various countries the U.S as well. Doesn’t matter though at least I can claim my artist had creative insight unlike yours who can’t even write a song. MJ wrote his hits but keep commenting about the boys since you can’t defend Elvis any other way.
March 29th, 2011 at 8:52 am
No, no No No No. ELVIS PRESLEY IS AND WAS A CREATIVE GENIOUS. JAILHOUSE ROCK WAS MADE SANG AND CHOREOGRAPHED ALL EXCLUSIVELY BY THE KING HIMSELF. That video along was the first decades before MTV! I would put that video of Elvis against ANYTHING MJ HAS done and it would and will blow anything he has done out of the water!
Without using special effects of course!
He did write his own music, Not all of it granted, but he didn’t have to… He was the greatest singer, performer the world has EVER known! He choreographed all his famous moves on the stage as well as in his best selling movies. He played the guitar. He doesn’t have to write music to be great. Get it through your thick head. Even mj didn’t write a lot of his songs! And most music was written not by the beatles 4 but the manager.
So learn afew things befoire you spat your nonsense!
LONG LIVE THE KING OF ROCK N’ ROLL!
March 29th, 2011 at 8:57 am
One thing though… ,I must admit his Thriller video from what I saw was pretty good. ANd billie Jean. But other than that… Maybe his Ben song was touching..
March 29th, 2011 at 10:20 am
I wouldn’t but jailhouse rock above MJ’s video but then again am bias as are you. You have to understand that black artists face a lot of racism during Elvis time even during MJ’s time when he first started so they wouldn’t be able to but a video like jailhouse rock on tv even if they wanted too especially during Elvis time. Heck if it wasn’t for MJ’s record company threatening to pull other artists off MTV Billie Jean wouldn’t even make it on their station. Listen to MJ’s demo before you dismiss him like beat it, don’t stop till you get enough, wanna be starting somethin etc., in terms of special effects am sure Elvis would use it if it was at his disposal during his time. Anyways am tired of arguing good to know you appreciate some MJ music. You will always say Elvis is the best and I will always say MJ is I just don’t like it when people take personal shots you don’t have to do that in order to make Elvis look better. In terms of titles well MJ will always be King of Pop and Elvis still retains his title of King of Rock n Roll so no need to fight over that.
March 29th, 2011 at 10:21 am
Oops I meant put.
March 29th, 2011 at 9:20 pm
WRP - do you really believe everything you’ve been writing, or are you just trollin?
You point to fame and wealth as the reason why Elvis is #1, as opposed to artistic talent and creativity and credibility. How superficial. Elvis was the first white boy to cash in the black rock n’ roll movement. In other words, he wasn’t the LEAST BIT important to the art form, he merely made it popular among lame, probably racist 50’s white people. He wrote at most 20% of his songs, and most of them were ripped-off anyway. I’ll put it to you this way - Elvis was a cash-in, he was not unique musically or mentally, he merely looked good in front of the camera. Had Elvis never existed, someone JUST like him would have filled his position. On the other hand, had John Lennon or Chuck Berry never existed, rock n’ roll history would have probably been drastically different today. Any questions?
March 31st, 2011 at 2:32 pm
You smoked some good MJ I guess. Fame and wealth had NOTHING to do with Elvis being the Greatest of any era, You ignorant misguided fool. But the FAME and money had to come along and join the ride … it just couldn’t stay away from GREATNESS! ELVIS HAS AND HAD MORE MUSIC TALENT THAN THE UNFAB 4 AND CHUCKIE BABY PUT TOGTHER IN HIS ONE HAND! You are just sooo jealous of a white man sounding better than ANY black man EVER could! Elvis Presley is and always will be the most innovative, unique, talented singer, performer, musician, you or anyone else will ever see! One in a thousand billions!
Chuck Berry who? He had no talent, and was so-so as a singer, and just blended in with all the other black singers of his era. People will not remember him. If there was never a John Lennon, his son sean, would never be born. Thats it. No big deal. Rock N’ Roll would surely still lives on, and be a better place without the happy-go-lucky-hippy tranced pops songs, that was very immaturish with lyrics written like little boys.
March 31st, 2011 at 3:19 pm
HJ - All I know is that Elvis never proclaimed himself to be the King. Only the fans and critics did that. They say MJ was a self-proclaimed king of pop. Thats a BIG difference in my book.
March 31st, 2011 at 9:30 pm
Actually it was Elizabeth Taylor who named him King of Pop.
March 31st, 2011 at 9:33 pm
Also forgot to mention that if you look at old footage from the Victory Tour fans were already calling him the King and that’s before Elizabeth Taylor you can find the clip on YouTube.
April 2nd, 2011 at 6:31 am
Well there you have it! That is WORSE! ET is NOT I REPEAT not in the music business! SHE WAS AN ACTRESS!
Thats like saying ALL LAWYERS are morally driven and would pass every lie detector test!
HAW HAW HAW
He is only a “King” in his own mind. Trying to copy the REAL KING, ELVIS PRESLEY. HE and you are the real joke ! He is no more a king of pop than Elisabeth Taylor! The king of POOP maybe because he has all his adopted kids and didn’t know how to change a diaper.
April 2nd, 2011 at 8:17 am
Well alright then, WRP is trolling. Well, either that or he’s psychotic.
April 10th, 2011 at 3:15 pm
Michael Jackson DESERVES TO BE ON TOP OF THIS LIST!!!
And f@$& the people who disagree.
Like you WRP, you are a stupid idiot.
No disrespect to Elvis,
But he wasn’t the only King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
There was Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, & other great icons from the 50’s.
Michael is the ONE & ONLY KING OF POP!!
ELIZABETH TAYLOR GAVE HIM THE NICKNAME & EVERYONE ELSE AGREED!!!
MICHAEL didn’t call himself the King of Pop!
As a matter of fact, he didn’t even know where it came to be!
Another thing
MICHAEL UNIFIED SO THE WORLD ALL OVER!!
ALL OF THOSE PLACES LIKE THE GHETTOES & Half of ASIA & Most of AFRICA!!
THEY NEVER EVEN HEARD OF THE BEATLES OR ELVIS, BUT YET THEY ALL ARE FANS OF MICHAEL & LEARNED TO DANCE FROM HIM A LITTLE BIT BY WATCHING HIM!
Compare Jailhouse Rock to the genius Michael brought to us with Music Videos.
Anybody would have come up with Jail House Rock.
But MJ went over the top with the music videos. That was AMAZING!!
PLUS other miracles like the Moonwalk & The move with him leaning forward & gravity!!
AND THRILLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE GREATEST SELLING ALBUM OF ALL-TIME!!!
With over 110 MILLION COPIES WORLDWIDE!!
I CAN GO ON AND ON ALL DAY!!
BUT I’LL LET THE FOLLOWING MJ FANS PINCH IN AND GIVE US WHAT THEY WANT TO SAY!
April 10th, 2011 at 3:21 pm
OH GO %&$^ YOURSELF WRP
DIDN’T I JUST SAY ELVIS AIN’T NOTHIN LIKE…
NOT JUST MICHAEL, BUT ALSO THE BEATLES.
IF ELVIS WENT HEAD TO HEAD WITH MJ ON STAGE,
MICHAEL WOULD WIPE THE FLOOR WITH HIM! HE WOULD MOONWALK HIM OFF THE STAGE!!
IF THE WAS A SINGING CONTEST BETWEEN ELVIS & JOHN LENNON,,
LENNON WOULD MAKE MORE GIRLS FAINT ALONE THAT HE COULD ALONG SIDE PAUL, RINGO, & GEORGE!!
SO F#$% YOU, I TRIED TO RESPECT ELVIS BUT YOU JUST WON’T SHUT YOUR F#$&%N MOUTH
April 10th, 2011 at 3:26 pm
Look WRP
Listen
Elvis is great in his own ways.
And you put them there.
Now let me make of list of what makes Michael Jackson in my book. And everyone elses, the best!

& who the &%^$ are you to judge me & how dare you pin me down for being mexican!
Yes I AM one!
What U GOT SOMETHING AGAINST MEXICANS!
I TRIED 2 BURY THE HATCHET B4 SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENS
I TRIED TO TO BE NICE 2 U, & U SPAT IN MY FACE, U STUPID SON OF A %^&$%!!!
YOU WANT THE REASONS!!
OKAY HERE THEY ARE!
REASON #1
Michael has been in show business longer than anybody, since he was 5 years old.
He could sing & dance better than people 4 times his age.
The Beatles & Elvis would have fainted doing that many spins!!
How long was Elvis around, 27 years!
MICHAEL WAS AROUNG for 45 YEARS!!!
He basically lived his whole life in the spotlight!!
#2
Michael Jackson was the one who came up with the GENIUS Idea of MUSIC VIDEOS!!
He started the whole new generation of today with those videos. (Thriller, Billie Jean, Beat It, & Bad, & Smooth Criminal & countless others.)
#3
Michael brought us so many miracles in his day.
1st the videos, than on Motown 25, He SHOCKED THE WORLD BY DOING THE MOONWALK FOR THE 1ST TIME, IN FRONT OF A WORLDWIDE AUDIENCE!!!
ANOTHER, In the music video for Smooth Criminal, where he was leaning to his side alot, without falling, THE MAN WAS DIFFUYING GRAVITY!!!
THAT’S GENIUS, ELVIS WOULD TRIP & FALL OVER & BREAK HIS FACE DOING THAT! No disrespet.
#4
Michael broke so many records & received more awards than anybody!!
He holds the record for most Grammy’s ever won in a year, winning 8 in 1984.
He was the 1st artist to have an album with 5 #1 hits.
The Bad Album
(BAD, The Way You Make Me Feel, I Just Can’t Stop Loving You, Dirty Diana, & Man In The Mirror.)
When he performed in the Half-Time show of the SuperBowl in 1993,
The Superbowl TV ratings actually were HIGHER than the Game itself, because people wanted to see the greatest entertainer in the world on the biggest stage in the world.
He has records in the Guiness Book of World Records like
Longest Music Video (Ghosts)
Most Charitable Artist
(Giving More to the Community)
And of course, THRILLER
THE GREATEST SELLING ALBUM OF ALL-TIME With 110 MILLION COPIES
AND IT IS STILL To This Day
THE BEST SELLING ALBUM OF ALL-TIME
AND SINCE THEN, NOONE ELSE HAS EVEN COME CLOSE TO TOUCHING THAT MARK!!!!
I’ll continue in another comment box
April 17th, 2011 at 1:44 pm
#5
Elvis was popular & huge in the United States & some parts of Europe, you are right, he made girls crazy there, he made them scream!
ELVIS was big in the U.S. & Europe.
MICHAEL WAS HUGE IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!!!!!!!
You could go to Asia, & Africa, & South America you would say.
You want to listen to Elvis?
Response “Who?”
OK, how about Michael Jackson?
Response “YEAH, MICHAEL, KING OF POP, KING OF POP, HEE-HEE, SHOMONE!!!!”
Michael toured all over the world, he made girls faint & cry, & guys too!
It took Elvis a life to be as big as he was!
So did Michael, but Michael went MUCH MUCH HIGHER THAN ELVIS EVER DREAMED OF GOING!!!
So Michael was, is, & always will be, BY FAR, more popular than ELVIS!!
#6
Michael has been a HUGE inspiration for the music business & it’s artists!
You ask, Chris Brown, Rihanna, Eminem, Nicki Minaj, Usher, & Justin Bieber, & all the others
they will say that Michael is one of there favorites if not their ALL-TIME favorite, I doublt any of them will mention Elvis.
#7
Michael ACTUALLY WRITES, (HIS OWN MATERIAL)
Michael wrote over 75% of his stuff.
Elvis only wrote like 10-30% of his, & most off them were copies from other peoples songs.
Also, when it came to songwriting between the two,
Elvis just wrote about love, sex, & girls.
Michael wrote about EVERYTHING,
love, girls, sex, saving the world, racism, his childhood, the tabloids & his anger toward them, Gane Violence, Zombies & Ghosts, EVERYTHING !!!
Did Elvis ever write a song that was relevant to
(Heal the World, or Man In The Mirror, or Black or White, or Beat It, or Bad, or Scream, Tabloid Junkie, Leave Me Alone.)
I DON’T THINK SO!!
#8
Michael has a greater imagination, & had a greater mind than Elvis.
Michael always thought outside the box when it came to his music videos.
(If you watch Black or White, he actually dances in the middle of the streets with in Indian women, he dances with other Indian people while gun blasts & fights are breaking out, He actually made a segment from the video of him, standing on the Statue of Liberty, dancing, & in the backround was the Eifel Tower, Beg Ben & all the other symbolic world creations.
If you watch Thriller & Ghosts, he has great dancing, & in Ghosts, he peels of his skin from underneath his feet, & he is a skeleton. Just WATCH HIS VIDEOS, & YOU’LL SEE THE REAL THING FOR YOURSELF!!
I will continue with my last reason in my final comment box
April 17th, 2011 at 2:00 pm
My 9th & final & biggest reason why Michael is different from the rest. Is that he made us all realize, that We Are The World!!
Michael cared so much about this world, & humanity, he would give & donated every cent that he had in an attempt to make the world a better place for everybody. He used his star power, not to get girls or money, but to give to those in need, & to spread a message to the world to help each other, & save this world that we love. You & Me. Michael would sing & write songs that would spread that message. The first one was We Are The World
He worked with so many other artists in that song to help Africa & all of the children that were starving & dying from hunger. Those artists include, Lionel Richie, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Ray Charles, & more.
He would keep it going with Man In The Mirror. Basically, he says throughout the whole song, if you want to make the world a better place, if you want to change the world, you have to start with yourself. He would sing & say & spread that message to a stadium jam-packed with over 80,000 people each & every night. He would keep going & reach the highest point of it all, with Heal the World!!
In that BEAUTIFUL Song, he talks about love, & children, & how we are all related, & how we can go from being a fighting, killing world, to a peace & loving heaven! He just wanted to Heal the World, he would do everything he could, including, beign the founder of the Heal the World foundation, which helps & supports children in need. Then he would do it one last time with the Earth Song. In the song, he expresses sadness of what has become of us
What we’ve done to ourselves & our home. But in that song, he spreads the word that, even with how bad things have gotten, we can still change it, & make it better for everyone. So please WRP, please try to understand & see what I’m telling you!
Elvis is what you say he is, he is the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.
But Michael is the King of Music, the King of Kings, & the King of Giving!!
He was God’s gift to earth. And he will always be in mine & everybodies heart.
So WRP, I’m sorry for the comments I made earlier, about you & Elvis.
I’m sorry if I offended you or all of the other Elvis Presley fans.
Thank you for your time & patience, & if you have your reasons, you may place them, & I ask if you do so in a respectful tone. Por favor. Gracias.
I love you Michael,
You will always be loved by us & you will always hold a special place in our hearts.
King of Kings
August 28th, 1958, - FOREVER!!!
April 17th, 2011 at 2:24 pm
Okay so you listed them.
But WRP,
1st the money will lie 2 U!
Look
Elvis was #8, hey I agree with you, that wasn’t right, he should have been in the top 5 at least, at #4 I’ll say.
But he is behind Prince. Who didn’t sell that much, But was incredible when it came to music, & could do it all, sing, dance, & play every instrument, he isn’t just known for Purple Rain U know.
Then all of that Graceland stuff,
That does sound cool, but the Neverland Ranch that Michael had, that was even better,
You could have so much fun over there, you could go on roller coasters, see animals, It was like a theme park & a zoo mixed into one.
And he would let people go there for free, that was even cooler.
3rd, DANG he made alot of TV appearances,
so did
The Beatles,
the Beatles probably made more appearances on the Ed Sullivan show than Elvis did, & Prince & Michael were hardly on TV at all, but you see how big they became.
So WRP, TV & Music, are 2 different worlds.
But Elvis does have his accomplishments
But he donated no where NEAR as much as Michael donated.
But yeah, Elvis is okay.
May 14th, 2011 at 9:26 am
new order and bernard sumner are #1 and that is that
August 9th, 2011 at 1:39 pm
The MAN, THE ROCK ‘N ROLL LEGEND, THE ONE AND ONLY KING OF ROCK N’ ROLL!… Elvis was AND ALWAYS WILL FOREVER BE the first single artist (as opposed to a group) to capture the attention and adoration of the baby boomer generation with a large number of well-recorded, not to mention, fantastic tunes as well as having a superior stage presence, so he became the King. And really, has there been anyone come along since then who has had the impact upon music the way he did? Not even the Beatles can lay claim to that since if there had been no Elvis, there would have been no Beatles. He single-handedly changed the face of music and no one has even come close to having he impact he had. (Maybe you just had to be around in those times to really appreciate what happened.)
THAT IS ALL THAT EVER NEEDS TO BE SAID……..
August 9th, 2011 at 1:51 pm
A quarter-century after his death, Elvis Presley continues to top the public’s charts as the greatest rock ‘n’ roll star of all time. Indeed, while he reaches mythic status among older middle-agers, he even leads the pack among those too young to remember Elvismania.
LISTEN UP FOOLISH MJ,BEATTLES AND OTHER LOSER FANS…
An ABCNEWS.com poll found 38 percent of Americans name Elvis Presley as the greatest rock ‘n’ roll star ever. Of the 128 performers named, no one else even breaks single digits; the second greatest rock ‘n’ roll star is Jimi Hendrix at 4 percent. (Appearing on this list, both with single mentions, may be the only thing Yanni and Alice Cooper have in common.)
Who Is the Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Star of All Time?
Elvis Presley 38 percent
Jimi Hendrix 4 percent
John Lennon 2 percent
Mick Jagger 2 percent
Bruce Springsteen 2 percent
Paul McCartney 2 percent
Eric Clapton 2 percent
Michael Jackson 2 percent HA HA HA
120 Others 1 percent or less
NO FUKN BEATLES OR SHITTLES EITHER! THEY WERE LESS THAN ZERO!
SO YOU STUPID ASS VH1 JUDGES EAT SHI* AND DIE !
