October 30th, 2009 - 10:33 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Kolkata, Oct 30 (IANS) IT giant Wipro Technologies has requested the West Bengal government to allot 50 acres to it at concessional rates for setting up its unit in the state, the IT department said here Friday.
“It is really good news for the people of West Bengal that Wipro has formally communicated its willingness to take land at Newtown Rajarhat area,” the department said in a relsease.
Wipro officials Friday visited the Newtown Rajarhat area, where land was offered for the IT giant, and expressed their happiness to set up the unit.
“Wipro officials visited the offered land and are highly pleased with its location, ready infrastructures and other intrinsic advantages.”
State IT Minister Debesh Das said Wipro’s decision to start its second campus in West Bengal “is quite encouraging”.
He expressed hope that the new facility “will augment the employment opportunity of the state to a considerable extent and boost its economic activities”.
The state government Sep 7 scrapped its proposed IT township project in Rajarhat, where companies like Infosys and Wipro had agreed to set up facilities.
The government scrapped the project following allegations that land had been taken “forcibly and illegally” from locals.
