Kolkata, July 10 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said Saturday that the state received substantially less agricultural credit in the last fiscal (2009-10) compared to its actual requirement.
“Extension of bank credit is another important area. The minimum requirement of bank credit for agriculture in Bengal is estimated to be around Rs.25,000 crore per year against which we actually got Rs.8,384 crore last year,” he said while addressing a workshop on Green Revolution in Eastern Region.

“It is essential that within three years at least, one bank branch or business correspondent facility is set up in every village with population of more than 2,000,” Bhattacharjee said.

Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said that the total agricultural credit disbursement last year across the country was Rs.324,000 crore.

Asked at a press meet why West Bengal got such low disbursement, he said: “I will go back and check what exactly happened in West Bengal. (The) country as a whole saw substantial improvement in disbursement”.
