We can build n-plants up to 3,000-4,000 MW: L&T
September 29th, 2009 - 11:04 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Sep 29 (IANS) Engineering and Construction major Larsen & Toubro Tuesday said it can build nuclear power plants with generating capacity of 3,000-4,000 MW a year.
L&T chairman and manging director A.M. Naik told reporters that the company had set up an integrated nuclear shop and forging facilities at Hazira in Gujarat.
“We can build nuclear plants up to 3,000-4,000 MW a year, but I don’t think that we will do more than 2,000 MW as the domestic industry is not scaling up yet,” he said.
He called upon the state-run Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited to change its method of execution for setting up of new nuclear power plants to allow for turnkey projects instead of going to several vendors.
He estimated that L&T’s revenues from the nuclear business will be Rs.1,500 crore per year if it continued to get orders “piecemeal”. But this could shoot up to Rs.7,000 crore if the firm was allowed to take up projects on a turnkey basis.
Naik said that the company had signed memoranda of understanding with most foreign nuclear companies except for the French giant Areva.
It was in talks with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited to build 1,200 MW CANDU reactors.
