Walmart tops Fortune 500 list
May 6th, 2011 - 7:40 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, May 6 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Fortune magazine has released last year’s Fortune 500 list. The list ranks the major companies in the United States. Once again, Fortune 500 has named Walmart as the biggest company in the world.
The list was released on Thursday and the ranking is based on the earnings of the companies involved for the previous year. Though Walmart’s revenue dropped domestically in the United States, the giant retailer enjoyed massive international sales which ensured that the company made it to the top of the rankings for the second year in a row.
The top ten companies according to the Fortune 500 list include companies like Fanne Mae, General Electric Co., Berkshire Hathaway Inc., General Motors Co., Bank of America Corp., and Ford Motor Corp.
The latest list reveals that newspaper companies in the United States are struggling. About a decade ago, five newspapers were in Fortune’s top businesses list. In this year’s list, Gannett Co. Inc. is the only newspaper company that made it. The company was placed at No. 415.
Some companies made it to the list for the first time this year. The new list has nineteen companies that made it back to the list after leaving it.
