Wal-Mart lures Canadians with 13-day-long Boxing Day!December 20th, 2008 - 12:11 pm ICT by IANS
Toronto, Dec 20 (IANS) Boxing Day - the year’s busiest shopping day after Christmas because of heavy discounts - has already arrived in Canada. With the world in recession, Wal-Mart Canada - for the first time in its history - kicked off Boxing Day Friday, a week early with heavy discount on products.
And this year’s Boxing Day will last full 13 days till Dec 31, the company’s headquarters in Mississauga near here said.
In the Western world, Boxing Day - Dec 26 - is considered the busiest shopping day of the year as companies offer record discounts on purchases, mostly electronics, toys and apparel.
In fact, shoppers start lining up at the superstores at midnight to grab the best deals.
“We don’t think Canadians should have to wait until Boxing Day to start their Christmas shopping or to save money,” said Wal-Mart Canada senior vice-president Sylvain Prud’homme.
“At an expensive time of the year and in this economy, early Boxing Day deals are the best gift we could give Canadians,” he said.
Because of the economic crisis, he said, Wal-Mart has rolled back “thousands of prices on items like toys, electronics, house-ware and small appliances, to help Canadians celebrate the holidays”.
Prud’homme said customers are feeling “financially pinched” and Wal-Mart is responding with record-low pricing.
“Our sales data shows that customers are still intent on celebrating Christmas and we’re ready to provide savings that matter around the home and under the tree. We think it’s our time to shine for those customers and to help them save money,” he said.
Wal-Mart has 310 stores in Canada, with 192 staying open 24 hours all days of the week, including holidays.
