May 13, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): Wal-Mart Stores Inc. desires to considerably ramp up its aid to the nation’s food banks to a sum $2 billion over the next five years. This data was revealed by the retail giant on Wednesday.

The company is more than doubling its twelve-monthly rate of bequeathing as the amount of Americans acquiring food stamps has increased to one in eight. Food banks are struggling to satisfy this demand.

This piece of news arrived the same day that Wal-Mart unveiled in a federal court filing that it would reimburse $86 million to resolve a class-action court case that alleged that Wal-Mart was unable to shell out vacation, overtime and other remunerations to thousands of previous employees in California. It is one of the numerous lawsuits the company has had to endure over its dealings with workers.

Wal-Mart’s strategy arrives in two parts: as a minimum, $250 million in grants over five years will be dedicated to the labors such as purchasing chilled trucks. Chilled trucks assist the fruits, vegetables and the meat to survive for a longer amount of time. Chilled trucks facilitate to transport them from store to charity. There will be programs to give food to children during the summer when they are not in school and obtaining government meals

But the massiveness of the contributions will be composed of in excess of 1.1 billion pounds of food that are not being vended owing to myriad reasons. About half will be spanking new fruits, vegetables, dairy and meat. The food banks have stated that these are the items for which there is a copious amount of demand.

The company guesstimates that the food will supply 1 billion meals. The store workforce will even put forward backing to food banks to facilitate them to administer their activities more proficiently.

This move expands Wal-Mart’s sharp augmentations in donations in recent years. In 2009, the company used up $21 million on starvation relief and bequeathed 116.1 million pounds of food. This is up from $12 million in cash and 42.7 million pounds of food in 2008.
