Voluntary recall on General Electric coffee makers due to fire hazards after 83 filed reports
May 21st, 2010 - 12:09 am ICT by BNO NewsWASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) – A voluntary recall was issued for General Electric coffee makers due to fire hazards, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said Thursday.
CPSC, in cooperation with General Electric, are advising consumers to stop using the branded 12-cup digital coffee makers, which are sold in white or black at Walmart stores.
The coffee maker can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers, as 83 reports have been filed of overheating, smoking, melting, burning and fire, including three reports of minor burn injuries to consumers’ hands, feet and torso. Reports of property damage include a significant kitchen fire and damage to countertops, cabinets and a wall.
Around 900,000 were manufactured, and they were sold at Walmart stores nationwide from March 2008 through January 2010 for about $30. A full refund is available when the product is returned at any Walmart store.
