Vehicles, ornaments, a body recovered from Bhakra canal

Patiala, April 21 (IANS) The ongoing repair work and cleaning of Bhakra Main Line (BML) canal here has thrown up big surprises for both police and local residents - cars, silver ornaments and a body were fished out.

Besides a dozen vehicles, including two cars and 10 two-wheelers, divers have also fished out a decomposed body of a man and few silver ornaments from the water during the last 10 days.

“Around 12 vehicles have been recovered from the water so far. They also included a brand new Zen car, which is totally intact. Now we are trying to trace the owners of these vehicles,” Amanpal Singh, in-charge of Pasiana police station in Patiala district, told IANS Thursday.

He added, “A body was also found during the cleaning of BMLcanal. Some villagers have also claimed of finding silver rings and bangles from the canal water.”

Police said they have solved an old abduction and murder case with the recovery of the body.

“The deceased was abducted few weeks ago and police could not locate his whereabouts. Now after the recovery of his body we have arrested two local youths and solved this case,” said a police official here Thursday.

According to the officials of Punjab irrigation department, the repair work of BML canal was started in the first week of April and it would continue till Friday. Water supply to BML canal from the main feeder has been stopped to facilitate the maintenance work that has been undertaken after nearly a decade.
