Uttar Pradesh water board gets award
October 24th, 2011 - 10:31 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, Oct 24 (IANS) Uttar Pradesh government’s Jal Nigam or water board has won a national level award for making landmark progress in its drinking water and sanitation network across the state.
Sponsored by the Bhaskar Media group, the ‘Pride of India’ award was finalized by a high-level independent jury comprising former chief justice of India Justice J.S. Verma, former chief election commissioner Naveen Chawla, former union urban development secretary M. Ramchandran, National Advisory Council member Harsh Mander and Intel India chief Praveen Vishketaiah, among others.
Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam chairman Navneet Sehgal, who was invited to receive the award told mediapersons here: “We have laid more than 7,000 km of new drinking water lines and some 4,500 km of sewer lines across different cities and towns of the state over a span of two years.”
“In addition, we have also set up Asia’s biggest sewage treatment plant in Lucknow with a daily handling capacity of 340 million litres, besides plugging the flow of untreated sewage water from multiple drains in the state capital.”
Among the other states to receive this award were Andhra Pradesh for making amazing improvement in its power distribution systems and Rajasthan for upgrading its power generation as also for remarkable improvement in its public road transport services.
