US stocks rise on improved consumer confidence
March 31st, 2010 - 4:35 am ICT by IANSNew York, March 31 (DPA) US stocks posted modest gains Tuesday after a private survey showed improved consumer confidence.
The New York-based Conference Board’s index of consumer confidence climbed to 52.5 from 46.4 in February. The index stood at 56.5 in January. A separate index of home prices also climbed more than expected.
The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average added 11.56 points, or 0.11 percent, to 10,907.42. The broader Standard and Poor’s 500 Index was virtually unchanged, gaining 0.05 points, to 1,173.27. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index rose 6.33 points, or 0.26 percent, to 2,410.69.
The US currency gained against the euro to 74.56 euro cents from 74.19 euro cents Monday. The dollar climbed against the Japanese currency to 92.8 yen from 92.46 yen the previous session.
