US stocks pushed higher by oil, metal gains

November 18th, 2009 - 6:17 am ICT (UTC +0700) by IANS Tell a Friend -

New York, Nov 18 (DPA) US stocks posted modest gains Tuesday amid a rise in commodity prices, continuing to push major indices to their highest levels in 13 months.
Crude oil rose 0.3 percent and metals like gold and copper rose, spurring gains in many commodities producers.

The gains overshadowed worse-than-expected government data on industrial production and a gloomy fourth-quarter outlook from retailer Home Depot.

The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 30.46 points, or 0.29 percent, to 10,437.42. The broader Standard and Poor’s 500 Index added 1.02 points, or 0.09 percent, to 1,110.32. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index was up 5.93 points, or 0.27 percent, to 2,203.78.

The dollar climbed against the euro to 67.24 euro cents from 66.78 euro cents Monday and rose against the Japanese currency to 89.27 yen from 89.11 yen.
