New York, Sep 15 (IANS) The US stocks extended gains to the third day Wednesday after German and French leaders showed their supports to Greece, Xinhua reported.

The Dow Jones industrial average ended 140.88 points, or 1.27 percent higher, at 11,246.73 after losing more than 100 points in morning session.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 jumped 15.81 points, or 1.35 percent, to 1,188.68 and the Nasdaq Composite Index rallied 40.40 points, or 1.60 percent, to 2,572.55.

Concerns over European debt crisis have weighted on the market in recent days as investors believed Greece was on the verge of a debt default.

In order to soothe nerves, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy issued a joint statement following a teleconference with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, saying that Greece was an “integral” part of the bloc that uses the euro.

Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said in an interview that there was “no chance that the major countries of Europe will let their institutions be at risk in the eyes of the market.”

On the economic news front, the US Labour Department said Wednesday that the producer price index was unchanged in Aug. after rising 0.2 percent in the previous month.

A separate report from the Commerce Department showed retail sales kept unchanged last month, after rising 0.3 percent in July.
