Jan 10, (THAINDIAN NEWS) In a latest move, United Parcel Service, the biggest package delivery company of the world is going to show doors to 1,800 employees. The Company spokespersons have said that the job cuts will take place owing to the reorganization of the entity’s small package division. It is going to reduce the number of regions from five to three and same will be the case with the districts. The industry experts are dubbing this step as a back office layoff. The job cuts will take place in the administrative and management positions. According to the company, more than 1,000 workers will be given a voluntary retirement option.
The Atlanta based company is hoping to exceed its announced earning prediction for the last quarter of 2009. It is slated to report its earnings for the 4th quarter in next month. This job cut is not going to affect even 1 percent of its workforce worldwide. It is planning for recovery with less number of workers and better technology. Around 340,000 of its employees are in the USA. However, the possibility of closure of any facility has been ruled out by the company spokespersons. The company has made a statement saying that consolidation of branches will not have an impact on its operation and sales team.
During the economic turmoil last year, UPS showed door to thousands of its employees. In the second quarter of the previous year it cut 15,000 jobs. The majority of these job cuts were through attrition. However, UPS denied the assumption that the new move is aimed to tackle the competition with its main rival FedEx.
